It’s getting close now…

After a break while we moved the business to Skipton, our workshops will be returning next week!!

Kicking off on 15 September with John Harrison who will be teaching all he knows about painting with a line and watercolour technique (and he knows quite a bit!)…

Then on 26 September, the incredibly talented and all round lovely person, Jo Lawson will be teaching how to paint flowers in watercolour.

But if painting isn’t your thing then how about trying creative fused glass?

Professional glass artist, Karen of Redcurrant Glass is teaching a creative fused glass workshop for us on 29 September.

All the workshops are suitable for beginners and are taught by the artists, with plenty of time to ask questions and be inspired!

There are a few places left, so find out more on our website or click the product links in the images.

“I bet you just want to take it all home with you, don’t you?”

That’s a question I’m asked regularly by customers. And the honest answer is yes… but also no.

Like anyone, there are things that I like more than others and would prefer to take home, while still being able to appreciate the skill and beauty of everything else in the gallery-shop and understand why someone else might prefer something completely different.

So the photos here feature a few of the pieces that I really am saving my pocket money for…

As long as they are still available when my piggy bank has enough coppers in it!!

Would you like to know more about how an artist develops an idea, chooses materials or knows when a piece is finally finished?

This Saturday Julie Bruce and Hannah of Felts by Hannah, two of the artists taking part in our Abstract: Beyond the Landscape exhibition, will be joining us in the gallery.

This is an opportunity to meet the artists behind the work, ask them questions about what they do and see the exhibition at your own pace.

The exhibition is free to visit. You’ll find it upstairs at Just Makers in Craven Court, Skipton and our two artists will be with us between 2-4pm tomorrow (Saturday).

Here’s a first look at some of the work arriving for Abstract: Beyond the Landscape.

Opening on Tuesday, our first rotating exhibition brings together Yorkshire artists working across painting, mixed media, jewellery, textiles and wood.

The work may differ in material, scale and approach, but each artist uses colour, texture and form to move beyond straightforward representation.

The exhibition is not installed just yet but it will be ready for visitors from Tuesday morning.

Abstract: Beyond the Landscape opens upstairs at Just Makers on Tuesday 1 September and will run for six weeks.

There will also be opportunities to meet the artist whose work is on display, including meeting Skipton artist Julie Bruce and Felts by Hannah next Saturday (5th September) between 2-4pm.

There are plenty of good workshops coming up in the Just Makers workshop programme over the next few months.

Each session is led by a practising artist who will introduce you to their materials, methods and way of working.

Groups are kept friendly and engaging. There’s plenty of time to ask questions, develop your skills and take home something you have created yourself that you feel really quite proud of.

No matter if you have been dabbling in art and creativity for some time or if you haven’t touched a creative tool since your schooldays, you are welcome to come along to one of our workshops and discover something new.

Swipe through for a look at what’s coming up. Full details and booking are available through the workshop section of our website.

We are excited to introduce the first in a new series of rotating exhibitions at Just Makers that opens next week.

Abstract: Beyond the Landscape opens on Tuesday 1 September and brings together abstract art by a selection of Yorkshire artists.

Yorkshire art is often associated with recognisable landscapes, but that’s only part of the diverse work Yorkshire artists are producing.

This exhibition looks at colour, texture, shape and form, with artists working across different materials and responding to a wide range of ideas.

The exhibition will be free to visit during our usual opening hours and will remain open for six weeks.

We’ll be sharing lots more about the participating artists and their work over the coming days and weeks!

I usually delete photos like the first one.

Let’s face it, social media tends to show us the finished version of a small business when the displays are done, the artwork is hung, boxes have disappeared and everything looks really very good.

What you don't see is everything that happens to get it there, or everything that carries on happening once the doors close.

I absolutely love what I do, and seeing the new home to Just Makers grow into what I hoped it could become makes all of it worthwhile.

But running a gallery or shop like this definitely isn't all standing around surrounded by art and chatting to customers.

There are artists to liaise with, deliveries to unpack, work to photograph, label and add to the website, displays to change, exhibitions and workshops to organise, orders to pack, accounts to do, marketing to plan and an apparently endless supply of emails!

I can't actually remember the last evening when I didn't open the laptop and carry on working for another few hours.

But that’s not a complaint. It's simply one of the realities of building a small independent business. I know I'm far from alone in that way.

Because behind every finished shop, gallery, studio, café or creative business you visit, there's usually an enormous amount of work happening that you'll never see.

So if you are a small business owner, drop into the comments the impression people have of what you do vs the reality!
