So… why Another Blonde Designer? 💛👱‍♀️💛

I’m very aware that the interiors world isn’t exactly short of blonde women who love beautiful houses.

And yes, I fit rather neatly into that category.

Hence, Another Blonde Designer.

The name has always been a little tongue-in-cheek. A nod to the fact that I might, on paper, look like another blonde interior designer- while quietly trying to be the very best version of that.

Because I don’t want to create another version of the same interior.

I want to create homes that feel individual. Collected rather than styled. Considered but not too perfect. Full of things you love, things you’ve had forever and probably a few things you didn’t know you needed.

So yes, I’m another blonde designer.

But hopefully not quite like the others.

And just to be clear-absolutely no shade to blonde hair. I’m rather attached to mine. 😉

💛Studio Notes💛

Does anyone else feel like September is secretly the start of a new year?

The summer slowdown is over, suppliers are opening their doors again, inboxes are waking up and suddenly everything that was “we’ll pick this up after August” is… well, being picked up.

This week behind the scenes has been a mixture of chasing, sourcing, planning, ordering and generally getting lots of little things moving again.

There are projects taking shape, new ideas brewing and quite a few exciting things I’m hoping to share over the next few months.

And amongst all of that, ABD is entering a bit of a new chapter too.

Nothing dramatically different.

Just more time, more focus and a rather long list of things I’ve been saying “when I have time…” about.

Apparently that time is now. 👀

House Diaries | Chapter 7 🏡
We have a front door.

A sentence that sounds remarkably unexciting until you’ve spent months planning, measuring, changing your mind and staring at a hole where said door is supposed to go.

But this weekend, the new front door finally went in. 🙌

And suddenly our future boot room and entrance feels a little less like a building site and a little more like an actual room.

Obviously, progress didn’t come without its highlights…

The dust is now approximately 3 inches thick.

Everything we own seems to have acquired a fine layer of it.

And the builder’s dog celebrated the new entrance by weeing on the carpet.

So, all going swimmingly.

But amongst the dust sheets, tools and questionable dog behaviour, I can finally start to see the space I’ve had in my head taking shape.

Still plenty to do. Still lots of decisions to make. And definitely some carpet cleaning required.

But we're one step closer.

And I am VERY happy to finally say…

the cat flap is gone. 👋

August lately… ☀️

A bit of work, a bit of life and quite a lot happening somewhere in between.

Projects coming together, deliveries arriving, decisions being made and plenty going on behind the scenes that hasn't quite made it onto Instagram yet.

There have also been slower days, time with friends, good food, wandering around looking at things I absolutely don't need and, inevitably, finding inspiration in completely random places.

The house is still a work in progress.

The to-do list remains optimistic.

And my camera roll is currently an alarming mixture of beautiful interiors, antiques, screenshots of things I want to buy and completely unnecessary photos of doors.

So... pretty standard really.

A little life lately before September arrives and we all collectively pretend summer isn't nearly over.

“I don't really know what my interior style is…”

Good.

You don't need to.

In fact, I'd much rather hear about the places you love, the things you've collected, how you actually live and how you want your home to feel than be given a perfectly defined interior style.

You might love an antique chest, a contemporary sofa, a bold stripe and a slightly battered chair you've owned for 15 years.

They don't necessarily belong to one particular "style".

But they belong to you.

Part of my job as a designer is finding the thread that connects those things then turning it into a home that feels considered without feeling overly designed.

So don't worry if you can't decide whether you're traditional, contemporary, country, eclectic or whatever the latest interiors label happens to be.

You don't need a label.

You just need a starting point.

And sometimes that starting point is as simple as:

“I don't know exactly what I want... but I know how I want it to feel.”

That's more than enough to begin.

💛Studio Notes💛

A little bit of classic chequerboard going up on the walls of a recent project...

Chequerboard might be having a bit of a moment right now, but it's also been around considerably longer than Instagram-which is exactly why I love it.

Used on the walls, this classic pattern brings just enough interest and character without the need to overcomplicate the rest of the space.

I'm always wary of choosing something simply because it's currently everywhere. For me, there's a big difference between following a trend and choosing a design that's stood the test of time.

The question I always come back to is-

Will we still love it when it isn't all over our feeds?

With this one, I think the answer is definitely yes.

And seeing these tiles finally installed has made me very excited to show you the rest... 👀

House Diaries | Chapter 6 🏡
The bit where it doesn't look like much is happening...

There comes a point in every renovation where you've made approximately 100 decisions, spent far too much time thinking about tiny details...

…and the house looks exactly the same.

We're currently there.

Plans for the entrance, boot room and utility are coming together, decisions are being made and lots is happening behind the scenes.

It might not be particularly Instagram-worthy just yet, but this is the stage where all those little decisions start setting the tone for what's to come.

And apparently I've developed some very strong opinions about things I previously didn't know I cared about.

More on those soon…

For now, we're firmly in the trust-the-process phase.

Designer Notes ✏️

Your best interior inspiration might have nothing to do with interiors.

When you're planning a room, the obvious place to start is Pinterest, magazines or Instagram.

But sometimes I think the best inspiration comes from looking somewhere completely different.

The colour of an old front door.

A striped deckchair on the beach.

The tiles in a favourite restaurant.

A slightly battered antique spotted at a car boot.

The colours in a garden.

A hotel you still think about years later.

Even the combination of colours someone happens to be wearing.

These are often the things that tell you far more about what you genuinely love than scrolling through hundreds of perfectly styled rooms.

Take photos. Save scraps. Notice colour combinations. Pick things up on your travels. Keep the slightly random image that you can't quite explain but makes you feel something.

You don't need to know why you like it yet.

Eventually, patterns start to appear.

And that's usually where a home that feels like you, rather than a copy of somebody else's, begins.

So perhaps the next time you're looking for inspiration for your home...

Put the phone down and look around instead.

Sunday Slowdown 🌿

A weekend of doing a little bit of everything… and not very much at the same time.

A few jobs around the house, some time outside, good food, good company and the inevitable bit of pottering that somehow takes up an entire afternoon.

The to-do list is still very much alive and well, but that's Monday's problem.

For now, I'm calling the weekend done, putting the kettle on and ignoring anything that requires a tape measure.

Back to projects, plans and probably far too many samples tomorrow.

Studio Notes | Wednesday ✏️

A little look at what's happening behind the pretty pictures...

This week has mostly involved samples, sourcing, chasing deliveries, answering emails and making approximately 47 tiny decisions that nobody will ever know were made.

Which is pretty much interior design in a nutshell.

There are exciting things starting to come together on projects, new ideas being worked through and, inevitably, a few things that haven't quite gone to plan.

Including the slightly less glamorous discovery that a scammer has been using my mobile number. Not exactly the kind of new business enquiry I was hoping for... 🙃

Thankfully, back to much nicer things...

Problem solving, finding the right pieces and slowly watching everything click into place.
