Last week we visited the former Southminster Police Station to check in on the latest progress. It’s amazing to see how far things have come. Each visit brings us one step closer to the finished outcome.

It was great to see the latest progress on our recent site visit to Lancaster School, which is part of Southend SEN Trust. Our material palette for the new Multi-use Hall of Ibstock Architectural Masonry and Ibstock Tilebrick provides warming tones and tactile yet robust surfaces, which looked great in the autumnal sunshine. These pink and earthy colours will look brilliant against the green accent colour we’ve selected for the doors, windows, and entrance canopy.

T J Evers are now up to roof-level, and the new Multi-use Hall will provide a much-needed facility for music lessons, PE, drama performances, and communal dining for the staff and students. We look forward to seeing the roofing completed and the building progressing towards being weathertight, with internal work to follow.

Exciting to see the mock-up for the glazed brick extension to the listed Former Southminster Police Station.

Back to School

SKArchitects had the pleasure of working with our client Southend YMCA Community School and main contractor RJ Ellis Ltd over the school summer holidays to revamp the school hall. The project involved the removal of the existing damaged ceiling, redecoration of walls and exposed roof structure, reinstatement of electrical fittings, and installation of acoustic wall panels. The project was completed on time and on budget.

SKArchitects worked closely with the school to plan the refurbishment, managed the tender process, and carried out contract administration.

If you would like us to assist you with your project, please feel free to contact us.

After an exceptionally long journey, we are pleased to announce that the planning inspectorate has approved our proposals for the Empire Theatre site. This brings together a targeted piece of work for renewal in the heart of the City Centre and includes Tylers Avenue which was also approved at appeal towards the end of 2024. The inspectorate noted a couple of important issues that we had tried to thrash out with the local authority in particular “The roof storey, with its set-back and change of material, would successfully articulate a termination point to the proposed building. The articulation employed at lower levels on the flank elevations would provide interest and relief from an otherwise blank façade… [and] the change in material between the brick elevations and bronze zinc roof storey would provide visual interest in itself.”

What an enjoyable way to spend a sunny afternoon!

This week we had the privilege of visiting three 2024 RIBA East Regional Award-winning projects in Cambridge; Dining Hall by Feilden Fowles Architects, John Bradfield Court by Allies and Morrison, and WongAvery Gallery by Níall McLaughlin Architects.

Huge thanks to the South Essex Chapter, Homerton, Darwin and Trinity Colleges, and the architects for organising and hosting us.
