It`s been raining for months it seems. Not being equipped to start building an Ark, I made some coasters on the theme `Desert` in the hope it might give the weather gods a little hint...

I began this page because the work I was making has a common theme that was taking me on a journey into myth and archetypes, stories and icons. I am fascinated by the idea of the Quest - the search for some sort of narrative in our lives. In these paintings I hope people can find their own stories - images that resonate with them.
I have been reading the works of Jean Shinoda Bolen, a Jungian analyst and author who has made me think about the way we use iconic characters or stories to look at our selves. This has taken me back to the far off days of my Degree dissertation, when I first linked the theories of Joseph Cambell (The Hero with 1000 Faces) to the `heroes and villains` in the performance and visual art projects I was leading in the community. Dr Bolen uses these iconic `Hero` figures in her work - she sees which archetypal figure her patient identifies with - and then they can discuss what it means on an objective level.
This seems to echo the way the Tarot works: in the card and in my painting the Fool is an innocent, setting out on a journey. We can look at the card (and the painting) and comment on it - the mountains are high and possibly difficult to scale, but the sun shines out beyond them. In my painting I have given the boy a Muse (his music) to drive and comfort him. And also a small friend who seems less than interested in his quest (I have dogs) but who provides companionship. So in `reading` this painting I see what I am doing in my life. For someone else, it is an entirely different story. And I would be happy to hear your unique interpretations.
