Stretch fabrics really came into their own in the 20th century. Before modern stretchy fibres arrived, clever knitters had already discovered that the way yarns are knitted together allows fabric to stretch naturally. Then came elastane in the late 1950s, and suddenly everything from sportswear to everyday clothing became a lot more comfortable!

And that brings us to Leicester! 🇬🇧

Every metre of our stretch fabric comes from Discovery Knitting, a British manufacturer producing fabrics for some of the better UK clothing brands.

They're a lovely bunch of people who share our values – quality, honesty and doing things properly.

We buy their overmakes – beautiful fabrics produced in excess of their customers' requirements.

No mystery bales of ancient dead stock gathering dust in some forgotten warehouse. Just fresh, quality British-made fabrics, mostly cotton-based, ready for their next adventure.

🧵💙 A LITTLE IMPERFECT. ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL. 💛

There's something wonderful about this quilt—and it's not just the gorgeous colours.

Look closely. Not every seam is perfect, and not every point meets exactly where the quilting police might insist. And do you know what?

We absolutely love it just as it is. ❤️

We live in a world obsessed with perfect photographs, homes, bodies and everything else. Social media has a lot to answer for!

But perfection is exhausting to chase and often unattainable.

Creativity isn't about getting everything right. It's about having the confidence to have a go.

This quilt has character, quirks and personality. Its tiny imperfections tell us it was made by a human being, not a machine.

This beautiful quilt uses Dashwood Studio fabrics, designed in Britain and produced by specialist quilting fabric screen printers in Korea.

The quality matters: beautifully printed designs, lovely cotton, rich colours and fabric that makes sewing a pleasure while helping your creation stay beautiful for years.

We love Dashwood because its designs have something mass-produced fabrics often lack—individuality.

We also know fabric quality. We test what we sell because we'd rather find a problem ourselves than have a customer discover it after weeks of making something beautiful!

At Craft Outlet in Spalding, we're fiercely independent, a little bit different, and rather proud of the people who make our shop what it is.

💕 In the middle, we have VICKY – The Boss!

Vicky is our manager, the one who somehow keeps everything running smoothly, even when the rest of us are doing our best to make that impossible! 😂

She's kindness itself, cares deeply about everyone, and always has time for someone who needs a little help. She looks after the team, our customers and all those little things that nobody notices until they don't get done!

💕 On the left, EMMA – Our Resident Live Wire!

You'll probably hear Emma before you see her! She's loud, slightly mad (in the nicest possible way!) and has a heart of absolute gold.

But don't let the madness fool you. Emma really knows her sewing. She should do, because she has her own sewing business too!

If you've got a sewing question, she's your woman. Just be prepared for an enthusiastic answer! 😂

💕 On the right, TANYA – Our Quiet Treasure!

Every team needs a Tanya.

She's gentle, thoughtful and one of the kindest people you could ever meet. She's the one who quietly notices if someone needs a little reassurance, a helping hand or simply a friendly face.

And she's our very own international department! Tanya speaks several languages, which rather puts the rest of us to shame. Some days we struggle with English! 😂

🎨 FROM THE MILITARY TO MASTERPIECES! 🎖️

Meet Robert Deaton. Artist, craftsman, television personality… and a man who clearly doesn't believe in doing things by halves! 😂

Robert has had a rather interesting journey. From a career in the military to becoming an exceptionally talented artist, specialising in the fascinating Japanese art of Kinusaiga and his own style of Fabric Mosaic.

And when we say talented, we really do mean it!

📺 He's appeared on national television.

🌍 His artwork has travelled far and wide.

🌷 And these two magnificent pieces? They were specially commissioned for Springfields Gardens.

Not exactly something you knock up on the kitchen table over a wet weekend!

What makes Robert's work so fascinating is the way he transforms pieces of fabric into extraordinary works of art, creating intricate designs, texture and depth without traditional sewing.

And here's the exciting bit…

We're delighted to have an exhibition of Robert's work in our museum area at Craft Outlet, where you can come and see his remarkable creations for yourself.

But there's more!

🌈 90 COLOURS. NOT A SINGLE PATTERN. AND JUST LOOK AT THE RESULT! 🧵🪡

This beautiful quilt is on display in our Craft Outlet Store. And here's something rather special about it…

Every single piece is made from plain coloured fabric. Not a printed pattern in sight!

It's a wonderful example of what you can create with a little imagination, clever colour combinations and, most importantly, really good quality fabric.

But there's something else we want to tell you about those gorgeous colours. And it's something that matters rather a lot if you're making a quilt you want to treasure for years.

🎨 NOT ALL COLOURED FABRICS ARE CREATED EQUAL!

Good quality, richly dyed fabric costs more to manufacture. Why? Because quality dyes, the dyeing process and making sure those colours stay where they belong all cost money.

Cheaper fabrics can look perfectly respectable on the bolt. But sometimes the colours are a little dull, a bit washed out, or simply lack that wonderful depth you see in this quilt.

And the real test? Time, washing and everyday use.

Poorly dyed fabrics can fade, lose their vibrancy or release colour in the wash. Not exactly what you want after spending weeks, perhaps months, creating something beautiful!

Good quality fabrics, properly dyed and cared for, are far better at keeping their colour.

And that's where we're a little different.

We don't just buy fabric, put it on a shelf and hope for the best.

We TEST it. Yes, really!

We check fabrics for colourfastness, fading and shrinkage because we'd rather discover a problem before you spend your money and precious time on a project.

We carefully choose quality brands whose fabrics we can have confidence in.

Because a quilt isn't just a collection of fabric squares. It's hours of work, creativity, patience and sometimes a few words we probably shouldn't repeat! 😂

🧵 NOT ALL PLAIN FABRICS ARE QUITE AS PLAIN AS THEY LOOK! 👀

And this one is a rather lovely example of why!

Meet Stoff Mélange – a beautiful fabric that proves you don't need a bold pattern to make something special.

Now, a little fabric history. 📚

The word mélange comes from the French for mixture, and the technique of blending differently coloured fibres or yarns has been around for centuries.

Rather than having one completely flat colour, mélange fabrics combine subtle variations in shade to create a soft, textured, almost woven-looking appearance.

And that's where the magic happens! ✨

A FABRIC WITH TWO FACES… AND BOTH ARE BEAUTIFUL! 🧵😍

Some fabrics are ordinary. Some are rather special. And then there's Tochio fabric from Japan. 🇯🇵

Japan has a remarkable textile heritage stretching back centuries, where weaving has always been about more than simply making cloth. It's about craftsmanship, texture, attention to detail and creating something that lasts.

And Tochio fabric is a lovely example of that tradition.
