Another job completed. This time we was in Spaxton restoring these timber casement windows! The windows where suffering from timber rot and decay, and a very rotten sill, that was letting water into the property.

Now, they will be protected for years to come!

Don’t jump straight to replacement.

These windows were painted shut, rotting and hadn’t worked properly for years. The owners had been told they couldn’t be saved—but look at them now.

I regularly carry out work on listed buildings where planning permission for replacement windows has been refused. Once an original window is removed, that piece of the building’s history is gone.

Most replacement timber windows are also made from cheaper, fast-grown softwood that can fail substantially quicker than the original timber they’re replacing.

We took these apart properly, removed years of failing paint, cut out and repaired the rotten sections and restored the original sashes and frames. New sash cords were fitted, the windows were rebalanced and draught proofed.

They now open and close as they should, while keeping the original character of the property.

Being told your windows are “beyond repair” is worth questioning. Very often, replacement is simply easier than carrying out the skilled work needed to save them.

If yours are painted shut, draughty or showing signs of rot, don’t assume replacement is your only option.

✨ Another Beautiful Restoration Completed in Glastonbury ✨

We’ve recently completed the restoration of four original timber sash windows on this lovely period property in Glastonbury.

Rather than replacing the original windows, we were able to restore and preserve them, retaining the character of the property while improving their performance and longevity.

One of my favourite restorations of the year.

This project involved the complete restoration of a beautiful stained-glass entrance porch along with five original timber windows. Years of weathering, failing paint and timber decay had left everything looking tired, but the original joinery was far too good to replace.

The porch was carefully stripped back, repaired where required, fully prepared and repainted, bringing the stained glass back to life and making it the focal point of the property once again. The five windows received the same attention, with repairs carried out where needed before a full repaint to protect them for years to come.

The difference between the before and after photos speaks for itself. A proper restoration that preserves the character of the property while saving original timber from unnecessary replacement.

Sometimes you meet customers that become like a part of the family, I’m sad to be leaving this project, but over the moon with the results.

A pleasure to work on for genuinely brilliant customers who trusted me to bring it all back to life.

A nice little before and after from this week.

The original timber cill had completely failed and was beyond repair, so it was removed and replaced with a new hardwood cill. While the window was apart I also renewed additional decayed timber within the frame to make sure the repair was done properly rather than simply covering up the problem.

Everything was then prepared, primed, painted and put back together, leaving the customer with a solid, long-lasting repair that still suits the character of the property.

One thing I see time and time again is homeowners being told their windows need replacing when the real issue is rot that has simply been left too long. Catch it early enough and most timber windows can still be restored, often saving thousands compared to full replacement.

If you’ve got soft timber, peeling paint or signs of water ingress, it’s worth getting it checked before a restoration turns into a replacement.
