DESIGNERS ON THE ROAD

Last week I have joined the tour organised by at Clerkenwell Design

What a group! Great conversations, beautiful spaces, and a reminder of why community matters in this industry.

Thanks for the photo

CDW 2026

Every year, the design world comes together during the Clerkenwell Design Week as the name says in Clerkenwell!

There's something about being around others who genuinely care about how spaces feel, so being surrounded by designers, makers, architects.

Then there's the product. New collections, new materials, things which you are able to touch and feel: The weight of a handle. The texture of a fabric. The way a surface catches the light.

And then you have the talks, people at the top of this industry, sharing what's actually working, what's changing, what's coming.
The learning, the curiosity is where you can keep staying sharp.

This is a journey. And I love it 🥰

HEALTHY HOME DESIGN

This post deserves a place on the grid. I attended a talk organized by about sustainability and using material with intention.
This is a story about someone who suffered from cancer and eventually try to make a more healthy home.
What can you do to make it happen, as a refurb is about more than how it looks, it's about what you're living with every day.

👉🏼A few swaps worth knowing:

✔️ Float your floorboards. No glue needed . Solid pine skirting holds them in place
✔️ Use pine skirting, not MDF. MDF contains formaldehyde binders
✔️ Choose large-format porcelain. No chemical sealant required
✔️ Consider cork. Natural, renewable, no synthetic binders
✔️ Ask about your sofa. UK fire retardant regulations mean most upholstered furniture is chemically treated. BIID is campaigning to change this
✔️ Look at your mattress. Natural wool, cotton or latex over synthetic foam
✔️ Eliminate plastic finishes and fittings, chemical adhesives and glues, synthetic glues
✔️ Use natural materials rather than polyester in fabric, carpet or insulation.

The decisions are yours — but you deserve to make them informed.

Thank you 🙏 to Tide Louw for an insightful presentation on colours.

When specifying to clients it is important you ask these questions:

▪️How the room is being used, at what time the day
▪️Understand the furniture which is going to be placed in the room
▪️The inspiration for the room
▪️Soft furnishings and art which will be placed in the room
▪️Which seasonal stories you are more aligned to!

▪️ Lighting is the most important aspect when choosing paint colours.
- How will the paint look like from morning to night ?
- Is the room North facing or South facing? Coat paints have these packs specific for the sun facing of the room
- Where is the source of lighting coming from? Natural lighting? The Lighting temperature?

It is good to know that are very sustainable. The paint is water based and no chemical has been added. They provide peel & stick testers (so no paint will go to waste unnecessarily).

FROM 2D TO 3D DESIGN WITH VECTORWORKS
When working on a project for a client, I use Vectorworks to do everything I need. I find it so easy to draw a floorplan in 2D, and i automatically get a 3D model.
Vectorworks produces high-quality renderings with colours, textures, and patterns. Materials can be adjusted easily, allowing finishes, tones, and patterns to be refined as the design develops.

The visuals created help the client to understand at this point already in the process, how the room will look like and what the atmosphere of a space will be.

IT IS ALL IN THE DETAILS 💫

When designing a space and you are in one of the last phases. Your moodboard is done. The furniture is in. The palette is set. The room looks good.
But good isn't the goal.
This is where I add the details that make people stop and stare: piping, fringes, tassels. The finishing layer that you should not skip, it brings personality, texture and a bit of extra accent and all these details will elevate a space.
Piping sharpens the edge of a cushion or headboard. It gives structure.
Fringes soften. They add movement. They make a room feel alive.
Tassels are the punctuation mark. On a blind, a throw, a key — they catch the eye and hold it.

Recently at Samuel & Sons, Martin Brudnizki, one of my favourite interior design, did a collection called Romaunt Collection for this Spring. This is for more refined luxury. Let me show you a few of these details.

But together, they make a room really feels complete, the difference between a room that looks designed and a room that feels designed.
This is the step I never skip.

THIS IS WHERE IT ALL STARTED 🌴

Let me (re)introduce myself.

I'm Milika — Dutch, born in Curaçao, raised in Aruba, lived in The Hague and Hong Kong, and calling London home. So my life has not really been in one place.

Growing up across cultures teaches you something that's hard to learn any other way, that there's no single way a home should feel. Different ways of living, different relationships with space, colour, light. I carry all of that into every project.

I love to travel and was lucky enough to seeing 6 continents of the world. And that has and is shaping everything about how I design.

Before interior design, I worked as a marketing executive in the hedge fund industry. Analytical, precise, fast paced. Skills I still use every day, just in a much more beautiful context.
I trained at the prestigious KLC School of Design in London and since then work with clients locally and internationally.

What I love most is the process, the research, the planning, the real conversations with a client until I understand not just what they want, but how they actually live. Then building something around that.
A space with warmth, soul, and personality that's entirely theirs.

If you're thinking about your home or a small commercial space, I'd love to hear from you.

MY DESIGN TOOL: VECTORWORKS ✍️
For space planning, I do my 2D and 3D designs ‘all in one’ through my design software Vectorworks. It enables me as an interior designer to sketch, model, document, and then present my project to clients and contractors alike.

Floor plans define function, elevations refine detail, and the 3D models bring it all together so your project kitchen is exactly how you want it, without surprises.

MOODBOARD

It always starts with an anchor piece, in this case, a light blue sofa, which by itself the colour is calm, soft, and timeless.
To add depth and interest, I layered it with earthy tones and tactile fabrics. I aim for the space to feel grounded, balanced, and lived in.

Moodboarding is a hands-on process. Feeling the weight of a fabric, seeing how colours react to light, and balancing textures in real time is something that can’t be replicated on a screen.

This moodboard is not AI-generated.
It’s built by hand, with real materials and real design judgement.

Also, I want to add, do not be afraid to mix colours, texture and patterns. When it feels balanced and in harmony, probably it is. There is not a right of wrong way. But if unsure, I am happy to help! ☺️
