Ever wondered who sang for the gods?

Well wonder no more, as her name transcribes, Calliope means beautiful voice and can often be shown in images, with her writing tablet in hand and at times she is depicted carrying a roll of paper, or book or wearing a golden crown.

Calliope was the goddess of epic poetry, a member of the nine muses and a daughter of Zeus. Hesiod and Ovid called her the 'chief of all muses'

Everything comes back to Gaia.

Gaia is the ancestral mother sometimes parthenogenetic ( meaning a form of reproduction ) of all life.

She is the mother of Uranus ( the Sky ) from whose sexual union se bore the titans ( who themselves have parented many Olympian gods ), the cyclopes and giants as well as Pontus ( the sea )

Her roman equivalent in the pantheon was Terra.

Her name, both spelt Gaia or Gaea both mean land or Earth meaning she is the personification of Earth.

WAS HOMER BLIND?

The greatest literary artist in world!!

We all know Homer ( not the Simpsons character ) but the author. Now it is presumed that he is the author of the Iliad and the Odyssey. ( books that are currently on my reading list. )

Assumed to be alive the 8th or 9th century BCE, in Ionia ( which is now modern day turkey!! )

And although these two epic poems of ancient Greece have always been attributed with the shadowy figure of Homer, little is actually known about him.

He is one of the most influential authors in widest sense, for the two epics provided the basis of Greek education and culture throughout the classical age and formed the backbone of humane education down to the time of the Roman Empire and the spread of Christianity.

did you know Pegasus is the offspring of Medusa?

the fact is, Pegasus is not only the offspring of Medusa but their father was indeed Poseidon.

Pegasus is associated with poetry. they were tamed by the goddess Athena and presented to the muses ( the nine daughters of Zeus and Mnemosyne; the goddess of memory represent the arts and includes music and poetry.

Although being a horse, Pegasus had control over water like their father. they could create a spring of water with just a stamp of their hoof.

Meaning the spring on Mount Helicon was created by Pegasus!! The waters on Mount Helicon gave anyone who drank the waters, powers of great creativity, powering poets, storytellers great inspiration.

and lets just be clear; THERE WAS ONLY ONE PEGASUS, they are one of a kind and an individual horse ( though it would be correct to say Pegasi when referring to multiple pictures of immortal winged horse Pegasus )

THE HUSBAND OF EARTH

Did you know Poseidon was regarded as the god of horses.

It's true, Poseidon is not only regarded as the god of the sea ( generally water ), but earthquakes and horses, which is pretty cool when you think about how badass seahorses are.

He was connected with many dry lands in Greece were inland, thought sometimes centered on pools and streams and other places associated with water

Poseidon was most likely introduced to Greece by the earliest Hellenes, who also introduced the first horses to the country about the 2nd century BCE. Poseidon himself fathered many horses; best known of which was the winged horse Pegasus by the Gorgon Medusa.

You can't outsmart me just because I am a women!

This is Aegis, a shield not only used by Athena but Zeus as well, it was said that this had some connection to the deity name Aex or AIx; a daughter of Helios and a nurse of Zeus or alternatively a mistress of Zeus

The modern concept of doing something 'under someone's aegis' meaning doing something under the protection of a powerful and knowledgeable / benevolent source.

The word aegis itself is identified with protection by a strong force with its roots in Greek Mythology and an adapted was adopted by the Romans.

Always support a woman.

THE DAUGHTERS OF ATHENS

A Caryatid is a sculpted female figure serving as an architactural support in the place of a column or a pillar.

Its purpose is mainly decorative, The one I have represented in this drawing is from the south porch of theErechetheion. This is the most famous one.

Currently the figure is in Lodon, the best preserved and those that were left on the building have now been reoved from the polluting atmosphere of Athens to the new museum.

These sculptures are dated about 410 AC.

A R T E M I S

Goddess of the hunt and wilderness

Diana ( Roman/Latin )

Within Greek Mythology, Artemis is the goddess of the hunt and wilderness ( along withwild animals vegetation, childbirth, care of children and lastly chastity ). She was heavily identified with Selene, the moon and Hecate, another moon goddess and thus was regarded as one of the most prominent lunar deities in mythology.

The animals that were associated with her were; deer, serpents, dogs, boars, goats, bears, quails, buzzards and guineafowl.

She would often roam the forests of Greece, attended by her large antourage, that was mostly made up by nymphs, some mortals and hunters.
