Euonymus alatus, commonly known as burning bush, winged spindle, or fire bush, is a popular deciduous shrub celebrated for its spectacular, fiery crimson autumn foliage. Native to eastern Asia, this hardy plant functions as a low-maintenance back-drop in the summer before transforming into an eye-catching focal point as the seasons change.
Key Characteristics
• Autumn Colour: Its dark green oval leaves explode into brilliant shades of strawberry-red and scarlet in late autumn.
• Corky Stems: The common name "winged spindle" comes from the unique, prominent, corky ridges or "wings" that appear along its angular green stems. These are highly visible and add architectural interest during the winter months after the foliage falls.
• Fruit and Wildlife: In late summer and autumn, small, inconspicuous greenish flowers develop into reddish-purple seed capsules. When mature, they split open to reveal bright orange seeds that serve as an excellent source of winter food for garden birds.
