The Hidden Whimsy of Antique German Kitchenware 🐱🏺
If you walked into a dining room in the 1910s or 1920s, the mustard pot on the table might not have been a plain ceramic jar. Instead, it was often topped with an arching black cat, an iridescent hound, or a quizzical duck!
German porcelain manufacturers based in the Thuringia region, such as Hertwig & Co. in Katzhütte and Schäfer & Vater in Volkstedt, became world-famous for creating figural household novelties. They excelled at moulding expressive animal handles onto lids for condiments, salts, and toothpick containers. Over a century later, many of the base jars have broken, but these characterful porcelain lids survive as standalone miniature sculptures. We love keeping them as cabinet curiosities or passing them to makers who upcycle them into unique furniture k***s and assemblage art pieces. Sorting through new workshop treasures! 🔍✨

There is something deeply satisfying about organizing tiny antique porcelain finds into sorting trays before they head to the photo setup. Just finished going through a other lot of antique German porcelain doll parts and small figurines. Mostly Hertwig and similar makers from the late 1800s into the 1930s. Plenty of the usual soft crazing and original paint still holding on. These are the pieces i find when the surface and age feel right, the ones that work well for restoration, mixed media, or jewellery. • Must hire/appoint a local rep in each market (e.g., one for Germany, one for France, for Italy) • Admin burden is crushing: separate reporting, separate fees, separate legal contact for each • Costs can spiral from €350 to €15,000+ per country depending on rep requirements
