🚗 Blue Badge Eligibility & PTSD: An Unfair Divide? 🚗
We recently heard from someone in our PTSD UK community who was struggling to get a Blue Badge in Wales, despite needing it to safely and independently get around. The most frustrating part? If they lived in England, they would have been entitled to one.
This raised an important question: why does something as crucial as a Blue Badge depend on where you live, rather than your needs?
We looked into this, and what we found was concerning. While the Blue Badge scheme can be a lifeline for some people with PTSD or C-PTSD—helping them avoid overwhelming environments, park closer to exits, and reduce stress—the criteria differ depending on location:
➡️ In England and Northern Ireland, certain PTSD-related difficulties can make you eligible for a Blue Badge.
➡️ In Wales, the same struggles may not qualify you for one.
➡️ In Scotland, eligibility is based on risk in traffic, meaning those with overwhelming psychological distress but no risk-related behaviours may not qualify.
This regional inconsistency isn’t fair. Two people with PTSD or C-PTSD could face the same daily struggles, but only one might get the support they need—simply because of where they live.
We’ve put together an article explaining the current state of play in England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland, so you know what you’re entitled to and how to apply.

We also want to hear from you. Have you or someone you know struggled to get a Blue Badge due to where you live? Do you think the system needs to be more consistent? What's your thoughts on Blue Badge eligibility criteria for PTSD and C-PTSD? Would one help you? Let’s talk. 💙
