As the nights draw in, is your glazing as secure as it could be?

When we think about home security, doors, locks and alarms usually come to mind first — but easily accessible windows and glazed doors can also be vulnerable areas of a property.

Security window film can be professionally applied to suitable existing glazing to add an extra layer of protection.

If the glass is broken, the film helps to hold the fractured pane together rather than allowing it to immediately fall apart, making access through the damaged glazing more difficult.

It can also help:

✅ Strengthen suitable existing glazing
✅ Reduce the risk from flying or falling glass
✅ Maintain natural daylight
✅ Provide additional protection without replacing the windows

And because clear security film can be extremely discreet, that added protection doesn't have to noticeably change the appearance of your home.

With autumn here and the evenings getting darker, we've taken a closer look at how security window film works and where it can be used in our latest guide.

Window film isn't just about keeping rooms cooler in the summer.

While reducing heat and glare is one of the most popular reasons customers contact us, professionally installed window film can solve a surprisingly wide range of problems in homes and commercial properties.

Depending on the type of film, it can help with:

✅ Increased privacy without permanently covering the glass
✅ Reduced glare on TVs and computer screens
✅ Protection against UV exposure and fading
✅ Added safety and security
✅ A more contemporary or decorative appearance
✅ Improved comfort in heavily glazed rooms

From front doors and bathrooms to offices, conservatories, bi-fold doors and large commercial glazing, the important thing is choosing the right film for the job.

Not sure what you need?

Tell Shades Window Films what problem you're trying to solve and we'll recommend the most suitable options.

Getting too much heat through your bi-fold doors doesn't necessarily mean replacing the glazing.

Large areas of glass are fantastic for bringing natural light into your home, but during bright, sunny weather they can also allow unwanted solar heat and glare into the room.

One option is professionally installed solar control window film, which can be applied directly to suitable existing glazing.

For this recent project, we installed Silver 20 internal film to the customer's bi-fold doors, helping to reduce the effects of the sun without losing the benefits of all that glass.

The right window film can help:

✅ Reduce solar heat entering the room
✅ Cut uncomfortable glare
✅ Reduce UV exposure
✅ Maintain natural daylight
✅ Make the space more comfortable in sunny weather

And importantly, it can achieve all of this without the cost and disruption of replacing perfectly good doors and windows.

Every property and type of glazing is different, so choosing the correct film is important.

If you've got a room that becomes uncomfortable whenever the sun comes out, get in touch with Shades Window Films and we'll be happy to advise on the options.

Love your bi-fold doors, but not the heat that comes with them?

Bi-fold doors are brilliant for flooding a room with natural light and opening up the view to the garden.

But all that glass can have a downside.

When the sun hits a large area of glazing, rooms can quickly become uncomfortably warm — with increased heat, glare and UV exposure often leading to closed blinds or curtains just to keep the room comfortable.

For this recent Shades Window Films project, we installed Silver 20 internal solar control window film to the property's bi-fold doors.

The film helps to:

✅ Reduce unwanted solar heat
✅ Cut uncomfortable glare
✅ Reduce UV exposure that can contribute to fading
✅ Maintain natural daylight
✅ Make heavily glazed rooms more comfortable

And because it's applied to the existing glazing, there's no need to replace the doors.

We've taken a closer look at why rooms with bi-fold doors can overheat and how the right solar control window film can help in our latest guide.

Why is some window film installed on the outside of the glass?

It's a question we're often asked — particularly when customers see installations like this recent External Silver 35 solar control film project.

The answer is that not every window is the same.

The type and construction of the glazing, its location and the level of solar control required can all influence which film is most suitable and whether it should be installed internally or externally.

External solar control films are specifically designed to withstand exposure to the elements while helping to reduce the amount of solar energy passing through the glazing.

For the homeowner, that can mean:

✅ Less unwanted heat entering the room
✅ Reduced glare during bright weather
✅ Protection against UV exposure
✅ A more comfortable living environment
✅ Natural daylight and views can still be enjoyed

The important thing isn't simply choosing a window film — it's choosing the right film for the glass and the problem you're trying to solve.

That's where professional advice and correct specification really matter.

If heat or glare is causing problems through your windows, get in touch with Shades Window Films and we'll be happy to talk through the options.

Solar control from the outside. Natural light and views from the inside.

One of the concerns we often hear about solar window film is:

“Will it make my room feel dark?”

These two photos from a recent Shades Window Films installation help answer that perfectly.

We installed External Silver 35 solar control window film to this large area of residential glazing.

From outside, you can clearly see the smart reflective finish of the film. But take a look at the second photo from inside the room and you'll see that there's still plenty of natural daylight — and the view of the garden hasn't disappeared.

The film helps to:

✅ Reduce unwanted solar heat
✅ Cut uncomfortable glare
✅ Reduce UV exposure
✅ Maintain natural daylight
✅ Preserve the view from inside

It's all about finding the right balance between solar protection and enjoying the glazing you already have.

We've taken a closer look at external solar control window film, including why some films are installed externally, in our latest guide.

When the sun comes out, what happens inside your office?

Large areas of glazing can create bright, attractive working environments — but they can also create some very practical problems for the people working inside.

Excessive solar heat can leave certain areas of an office noticeably warmer than others, while glare through the windows can make computer screens difficult to see and working conditions uncomfortable.

This installation is from the Shades Window Films archives and shows a commercial office where solar control window film was installed to help tackle exactly those problems.

Professionally installed window film can help:

Reduce solar heat gain through the glazing
Significantly reduce uncomfortable glare
Create a more consistent and comfortable working environment
Reduce exposure to UV rays
Maintain natural daylight without permanently closing blinds

And because the film is applied to suitable existing glazing, improving its performance doesn't necessarily mean replacing the windows.

We've taken a closer look at how commercial window film can help offices, reception areas and public buildings in our latest guide.

Outdated window film → a smarter, more effective solution.

A recent project at Swindon Crematorium is a great example of how replacing older window film can improve much more than the appearance of a building.

The existing multi-coloured film had become dated and, importantly, offered little protection against the heat build-up and glare affecting the interior.

After removing the old film, Shades Window Films installed Neutral 25 solar control window film across the glazing.

The result?

✅ A cleaner, more contemporary appearance
✅ Reduced solar heat build-up
✅ Less uncomfortable glare
✅ Natural daylight can still enter the building
✅ A more comfortable environment for visitors and staff

The before-and-after photographs show just how much difference the new film has made visually — while the real benefits go far beyond appearance.

Commercial window film can provide an effective solution for offices, reception areas, public buildings, schools, healthcare environments and other commercial premises where heat and glare are causing problems.

We've also published a new guide looking at how commercial window film can help reduce heat and glare in workplaces and public buildings.
