Not responding to negativity but promoting Joy, fun and creative projects. I'm Claire, after spending 20 year as a Royal Air Force Officer, I retired and started up my own business - The Little House of Happiness Craft Empoprium. A creative consultancy with a mission to encourage us to just 'Do what makes you Happy'. I was living in the Falkland Islands and there isn’t the variety of things to do

that you get in the UK. It’s a very down-to-earth way of life and traditional crafts and skills are a major part of the way of life on the Islands. We spent 2 years living there because I was in the military and I was posted there - the whole family came too. It was like living in a David Attenborough series with the wildlife and during a visit to Bleaker Island a friend asked if anyone wanted to learn to crochet. They were making poppies for Remembrance and needed as many as possible to sell and raise money for the Royal British Legion. And that was it, I was hooked and my love for crochet started. The journey from there to where I am now (via a bit of TV work too) is definitely one for chatting about over a coffee and some cake. I describe crocheting as fancy knotting. You use a hook and yarn and each stitch is about wrapping the yarn around the hook once, twice, three times to change the length of a stitch, linking stitches together, leaving gaps. It’s different to knitting, it only uses one hook and usually completes one stitch at a time, unlike knitting where you have 2 needles and can have a ridiculous amount of stitches on the go all at once. You make a mistake in knitting and it’s a lot of work to rectify it. I find crochet much more forgiving of mistakes. That’s probably one of the reasons it really appeals – because I make so many!

As many of you know I have been off the scene for a while because of my Dad passing away last year; 6 months later and my Mum fell and broke her hip. But her determination and courage over the last month to get back in her feet has inspired me to get my website back open. So, in her honour I've published a new blog. I'd love for you to take a read, link below:

My mum is an iconic woman. "Why? And why is that relevant to crochet?" you might ask. She was born in Liverpool in 1946. Yes, we've come a long way with regards to equality, but even now, we still have a patriarchal society; in 1946, it was on a different level. The eldest child, born straight after...

Some days you just need to fly a kite on the beach and not think beyond fish and chips for supper.

My business ethos is 'do what makes you happy'. Although my business makes me happy, I would not be happy knowing I have not been the best version of me when my parents need me to be. My Dad is moving towards the end of a beautiful life, he was born in 1940 while World War 2 just getting going. In cricket terms, them is good innings.

Therefore, so I can support my parents I have made the decision to cancel all events this year and focus on making sure my Dad knows how much he is loved.

Not everyone gets the chance to tell those they love how much they love them, so I see this as a privilege.

Get in touch if you want some yarn or crochet kits, I have a fair bit of stock I could do with reducing and you might be able to get some Christmas presents out of the way early.

Be kind to yourself and those around you, be creative, be happy 💕

The end of the school holidays approaches, the cricket season is ending, routine and school will soon be back upon us. So a family holiday is the perfect time to relax and start a new project.

I've brought this kit with me. Little April is one of the Sweet Crochet Friends kits by the as part of their collection. You get everything you need the yarn, stuffing, hook, safety eyes, beads, pattern and technique instructions. I can't find the designer details but I'm pretty sure this is by the amazing Khuc Cay. This is why I love kits so much, just grab the bag or box and away you go.

I hope to have these kits online soon, but love doing one myself first so I can answer any questions about the kits before I sell them. I'll keep you posted on how it goes. 💕

And so the cricket season starts, bringing to mind bucolic lazy days of relaxing in the sun with a pint of something cold, listening to the buzz of the bees and the whack of leather on willow; reality is somewhat different...

The weather may look inviting from behind the glass of the clubhouse but you need to have a blanket on standby and flask of tea in these early days.

Crocheting a blanket requires time, and time is something you have when watching a cricket match. Crocheting a blanket also means that you needs to pile it up on your knee as your work gets bigger.

I made a huge chunky throw when I was deployed in 2015/16 in the Middle East; my last Operational tour before leaving the RAF. It was made over the 6 months that I was away from home, and is a record of Christmas away from my children and birthdays missed. However, it's also a reminder of my family sending me a new ball of yarn out, with a new pattern, I would knit into a square and send it back. Blankets are precious and hold memories that cannot be created from simply buying one.

So, bring on the cricket, let's create more memories 💕
