It's been a busy week so far here. We have ceased all manual work, to sit in the shade and enjoy one of Mrs Wild and the Wild Bloomers favorite parts of HQ. The waterlily has graced us in the upper and lower ponds 😍.

A tidy up, mini plant shop and bridal visit at RC Monday, ready for the big day this Thursday and Saturday, eek! πŸ’’ πŸ’ it's always lovely to see the field through others eyes, and despite having our style agreed, we could add some "must haves/likes" to our brides wishes, given its the week of the wedding this is much easier to do closer to the time, as we are dictated hugely by the weather for floral availability. Then we cut for our weekly salon arrangement.

Yesterday morning a trip to a colleague to hand select some extra blooms (thank you ) We were already sweating at 9am in the morning just wandering listing blooms! Some mundane housework πŸ˜‰, arranging the vase and delivering to the salon. Then 4 hours cutting, conditioning, wrapping and protecting nearly 400 stems late into last night.

Today, we have done field checks, some deadheading and a stock count of what we need to cut this evening (a couple hundred more minimum) and have rescued the seedlings we forgot about in the greenhouse because lifes been a bit hectic! We've got some casualties!! πŸ₯΅

Now, a cup of tea, yes even in the heat and onto the next set of tasks when we find the energy to get up, hah!

We hope you're all managing in the heat, its a very trying time for us growers, especially when we have big events to fulfill and a mini heatwave decides to descend.

πŸ’§β€ΌοΈ Don't forget your water for wildlife, the Wild Bloomers spotted 2 amphibians in one of our water trays early evening last night, Mrs Wild saw a hedgehog around midnight and the birds have already been having their morning baths. We are keeping ours topped up and refreshed.
A SIMPLE TRAY OR SHALLOW BOWL OF WATER COULD SAVE A LIFE.

British Flowers Week
15th June to 21st June

Day 7!

Well, the last day may be here for British Flowers Week, but every week is British Flowers Week for us here at W&WB!

We hope you've enjoyed following along this week, maybe learnt something new about us and the industry we are so passionate about being a part of.

To finish the week, and being Father's Day, a trip out as team W&WB to a lovely little spot we recently discovered, Martha's Meadow.

We can't recommend this little slice of biodiversity enough. Brilliantly knowledgeable and such a tranquil, calm and wonderful place - harnessing native British grasses and wildflowers and trees, with perfectly thought through habitats, ponds, woodpiles and more all with information boards. We've definitely learnt some new things today and were able to share a little of our knowledge too.

The Wild Bloomers, of course, enjoyed the ponds, bug hunting, butterfly and dragonfly spotting and did some lovely little crafts too.

We are hoping to be able to return for their bat event later in the year!

Day 6!

How can you support British flowers?

πŸ’ Purchasing - bouquets, subscriptions, DIY buckets or for your events and special occasions, gift vouchers, booking onto workshops
πŸ’ Engagement - thats right, and it costs nothing! Liking, commenting, sharing, following, all helps small businesses be seen
πŸ’ Reviews - leaving a review can help show prospective new customers whether we are a trusted business, how we handle customer care and our product
πŸ’ Recommendations - tagging, word of mouth, sharing your experience of working with us, helps get our name out there

British flowers have movement, fragrance, scent and are not rigid and uniform in the sense they are not intensively farmed for perfectly straight stems, are free from nasty chemicals and other products which keep the bugs at bay and for days at a time in transit before they reach you.

Grown in our own climate (which is becoming more and more testing), cut fresh for you, whilst building and nurturing an eco system of biodiversity on our land as well as within our local economy.

British Flowers Week
15th June to 21st June

We've been super busy and missed Day 4 and Day 5 is nearly over!

Firstly, we missed the awesome Rowen Barn Alpacas from our tag list on Day 3! We cant recommend them enough for alpaca manure. Its made/is making such a huge difference to our soil health!!

I think today we are keeping it short and sweet, Mrs W has been at her other job all week as well as sowing biennials and a new project which we hope to be able to share next week πŸ‘€ , and has been at RC until 10pm giving everything a good watering tonight due to the heat we've had and are due for the next week πŸ₯΅.

Which is a prime reminder, waterbowls for wildlife! Especially important over the next 10 days, with temps reaching above 30, the birds, hedgehogs and insects will thank you. Something so simple can save a life πŸ’•.

Perhaps today, should be a bit of a "its not all summer dresses, straw hats and a cute little basket" moment 🀣 we will do better tomorrow, promise.

Something we got distracted by last week 😍 never underestimate an android phone camera!

British Flowers Week
15th to 21st June 2026

Day 3!

Today we want to share the importance about why choosing British flowers has so many benefits alongside the Flowers From The Farm theme for this year. The theme is Flowers For The Future.

πŸ’ Cut fresh, just for you - no air miles, no plastic packaging, no lengthy transportation, lower carbon footprint, tended with intention, care and love.

πŸ’ An ever expanding movement, of like minded, passionate growers, florists and wholesalers. This includes florists, wholesalers, YOU, our lovely customers and followers, who also support and champion British seasonal flowers and support their local growers.

πŸ’ A consistently concious effort, to be as sustainable and eco friendly as possible. Including but not limited to;
πŸƒ Recycling plastic containers for sowing seeds, or reaching out to recycle others unwanted cell trays or pots.
πŸ“¦ Not using plastic wrap; we use Kraft paper, jute twine and even our tape is recyclable and biodegradable and our gift wrap is acid free.
🐝 Not using things like pesticides or w**d killer on our field, theres a food chain - typically, there is always something that will eat the guys that damage your plants, let them. If we rid them, we adjust the food chain. Is damage frustrating still. Absolutely.
🌸 Leaving areas to be a bit wilder; nettles, thistles, mullion, alkanet, comfrey to name a few. Not only do these support host specific caterpillar/butterflies/moths and some providing early pollen for the bees, these can also be used to make a nutrient rich plant food.

πŸ’ Consistently trying to educate and discuss the importance of what we do, how we do it and why we do it. Rattling on? Or passion? Maybe a bit of both! It is so much more than just the bloom at the end, its everything in between too.

πŸ’ Positive outlook. Sometimes this can be incredibly difficult, especially with variable weather, when sales are less than desirable, and when burn out kicks in. But theres a bigger picture. Always. That's bigger than just "growing flowers". It is nurturing and supporting our land and also the many inhabitants that call our slice of RC their home.

πŸ’ Providing a product that unites many, whether thats a specific flower evoking a memory, sentiment, or the pure joy of wild, whimsy, beautiful bouquets, often with movement, fragrance and a sense of charm. Flowers can evoke many feelings and are included in many life events πŸ’•.

πŸ’ A network of brilliant colleagues, who are always a rant, celebration, or hub of knowledge to call on when needed for advice or to top up an order or to defer orders through if needed, or they're more local to the customer whose reached out.
A shout out of course to the diverse group full of encouragement and sharing their passions and skills (that Mrs Wild doesn't manage to attend enough of) .

πŸ’ Local economy. Keeping spends locally. Where small businesses, support eachother. Building relationships and friendships.
Where possible we try our best to keep our spends local to us or British. For the field and our own garden.
Our favourite places for buying plants are the lovely P&R Garden Supplies, another small local business we adore Ashlee Garden Bee and of course the wonderful Parnells Plants. With gratitude for stocking our bunches Thomas B Bonnett over the last 2 seasons and Parnells Plants too, as well as her unwavering support during late night messages and tags. Nearly all of our seeds are self harvested or from Chiltern Seeds and and a large percentage of our dahlia are from Halls of Heddon over the years which we've managed to overwinter and divide for our own stock.

πŸ’ Finally, but by no means least, having 2 amazing rescues nearby for any wildlife crisis. The Wildlife Lounge and . After all, if they inhabit our field and garden, we feel an unwritten duty of care if any are in need of rescue, rehabilitation and hopefully then release. And of course, we have a massive soft spot for nature!!

British Flowers Week
15th to 21st June 2026

Day 2!

Who are we, and what do we offer?

We are a small, local family run business. Primarily, Mrs Wild handles the load. However, there are some tasks that get assigned to Mr Wonky when the muscle needs to come in and she needs help with heavier tasks. But not often, because Mrs Wild is stubbornly independent!

We have 2 gorgeous Wild Bloomers who play a big part in our journey, from where it begins, to today. They adore the flowers, bug hunting and pond dipping, their favourites are tulips, dahlias and "dragon snaps".

For those of us who are new, hello πŸ‘‹ thanks for being here! We have been gardening for around 10 years, starting with home grown fruit and veg for personal consumption - this was absolutely a learning as we go endeavor. We still have 90% of our fruit, veg is due to go back on the list to grow again!

Our gardens are like a piece of art, a canvas that is ever changing, flowing and teaching us. Our flower field is no different. As the seasons come in waves, so does the mental health benefits of having your hands in the soil, seeing the result of your planning, hard work and determination. It isnt always sunshine and dahlias though, especially as we are at the mercy of our weather, insect damage and climate. But, we made a commitment and with that, we continue to evolve. More news on that another day!

Our flower filled journey began with our eldest Wild Bloomer during lockdown wanting to grow flowers for bringing indoors. Off we popped to the local nursery and shops for a then 3.5yr old to have free reign to choose plants, bulbs, seeds and compost. This grew into taking great nanny flowers every week, friends asking for bouquets and the ball kept rolling until we took the leap into sales.

Rubble Corner was purchased in June 2023 and quickly and tirelessly transformed into a micro flower farm by the autumn ready for biennial and shrub planting! Mrs Wild doesn't have the most patience when she gets something into her head and likes things done yesterday, something she works on, promise πŸ˜†!

RC is still ever changing, month by month, season by season, year by year. As we learn, grow and make mistakes. No day, week or month is ever the same, that's the beauty of British seasonality isn't it?

Predominantly we offer direct sales; whether thats a gift bouquet, bunches, arrangements for your business, or subscriptions. If you'd like more information about subscriptions, then please do message us! Subscriptions can either be a DIY bucket or an arranged bouquet.

As always, if you'd like a "doorstep" bouquet or gift bouquet, just shout us.

You may also see us pop up at one of your local markets, fetes or fayres over the summer months and the lead up to the C word! Please come and say hello, we would love to chat all things flowers!

British Flowers Week
15th to 21st June 2026

Day 1!

British Flowers Week, as mentioned yesterday, was founded in 2013. This year, BFW coincides with the UN's International Year of the Woman Farmer!

Flowers From the Farm members are primarily women, making up the majority percentage of members and are therefore at the forefront of the diverse UK growing sector which has an amazing representation across the country, with a range in sizes and offerings.

Don't forget, you can find your most local grower via the Flowers From The Farm
website by simply popping in your postcode!

Today we are looking at our favourite bloom, this is really difficult as we grow quite a few different varieties and love each for their own unique reasons. We grow from corm, bulb, tubers, cuttings, but primarily seed.

RC is made up from a diverse planting; annuals, perennials, bulbs, corms, tubers, shrubs - which can mostly carry us through each season. This also contributes beautifully to our biodiversity.

In terms of versatility, its broad range of types, sizes, colours and petal forms, dare we say ease πŸ™ˆ (not true, often prone to attack, have to be cut back, have to be babied through winter, have to be pinched, disbudded and well supported, lifted, divided) it has to be none other than dahlias!! But don't ask us to choose our favourite specifically!

Dahlias take up the biggest space on our plot for a single "type" of flower. What's not to love? They have a fantastic flowering window, some of ours are even trying to flower soon, earlier than usual, but we won't grumble. And carry through right until the first harsh frosts, which will blacken them.

We have between 150 and 200 dahlia at RC spread over 3, 30ft beds and 1, 15ft bed with an additional 60 ish at HQ.
Typically HQ only get cut if we need to, they're for our enjoyment, we've got to have something, right?

Did you know dahlia are also edible, including the tubers?

We would love it if you could comment a picture of your favourite dahlia 🌸

British Flowers Week - 15th to 21st June 2026

How is it already British Flowers Week tomorrow!! πŸ‘πŸ₯³πŸ’•

British Flowers Week was originally founded by New Covent Garden Market in 2013 with the purpose of championing the UK's cut flower industry.

Current figures show an estimated 14% of the flowers you see on the highstreet or in the supermarkets are British Grown. With the remaining 86% being flown or trucked into the UK.

In 2024, British Flowers Week was passed to Flowers From the Farm. A not-for-profit trade association, which we are proudly a member of, approaching our second year of membership this week!

To find your most local flower grower and/or florist, then its as simple as popping onto their website, typing in your postcode or your floral recipients postcode and looking through the members to see who is your nearest.

https://www.flowersfromthefarm.co.uk/

Over the course of this week, we will be posting reasons to buy British, seasonal, sustainable, local flowers. Whether that is market bunches, gift bouquets, subscriptions, DIY buckets or for your special events and many more other reasons you may have flowers, because, well, why wouldn't you πŸ˜‰.

Behind every flower, there is a flower farmer who has worked hard to bring you that special piece of their small business - growing and nurturing with care and attention to detail. Rooted firmly and deeply in a care for our environment, biodiversity, the pollinators we support, the range of insects and of course the birds and animals that share our land with us (for better or worse πŸ˜†). With a passion for what we do, how we do it and why we do it and what we are collectively contributing.

Please remember, our flowers are cut fresh to order, if you would like to order then please don't hesitate to get in touch! All we ask is at least 24hrs notice where possible.

Flowers from the Farm is a UK trade association promoting a financially and environmentally sustainable local cut flower industry.
