Rustic Crafts by Patrick I am at my most content when working on my beautiful antique lathe creating wood art or walking with my Springer Spaniel. I also make legendary sloe gin!

🌳 From an old apple tree to something made to last…

Patrick’s latest pepper mill has been hand-turned from applewood taken from a very old tree in our son’s garden in Wi******er.

The applewood has a gorgeous warm golden colour and some beautiful natural figuring, but Patrick couldn’t resist adding one extra detail: a flash of rich red acrylic tucked just beneath the traditional grinding mechanism. ❤️

It’s subtle, but catch it from the right angle and it really comes alive.

And these aren’t just decorative pieces. We use a pepper mill Patrick made for us a couple of years ago every single day, and it’s still going strong.

These are already proving popular, so there are more on the way…

And apparently there is a very special one currently on the lathe which I’m told is going to be a real eye-catcher. 👀

We will be at The Ringwood Artisan Market all day on Saturday with our latest gorgeous creations all made from natural wood, mostly from The New Forest. There will also be a beautifully turned applewood pepper pot with a flash of red acrylic to enhance the beauty of your table centrepiece. Photo to appear here later today.

We will be having a sale section too with a few greatly reduced items including touch table lamps and t-light holders to whet your appetite!

This photo is Patrick’s latest creation - a mahogany bowl. An absolute beauty.

I was visiting a local carpenter friend and, while we were chatting in his workshop, I spotted a large bin in the corner filled with assorted wood offcuts. Being a woodturner, I can rarely resist a promising piece of discarded timber, so I asked if I could have a rummage through it.

I came home with several pieces that looked interesting, but it wasn’t until I examined them more closely that I realised quite what I had found: a beautiful piece of mahogany.

New Forest Hazel & Blue Acrylic Vase

This unusual vase has a rather special connection to the history and landscape of the New Forest.

The hazel used to create it was cut from an old hedge bordering Heywood Sumner House and my brother’s property at North Gorley in the New Forest.

Heywood Sumner House takes its name from the Arts and Crafts artist, designer and antiquarian George Heywood Maunoir Sumner, who made his home at Cuckoo Hill in the early 20th century. That connection makes the origins of this particular piece of hazel especially interesting.

Rather than turning the vase from a conventional solid piece of timber, I cut the hazel into individual sections and combined them with a wonderfully rich blue and purple acrylic resin before turning the whole piece on the lathe.

The result is completely unique.

Around the outside, the natural hazel appears to rise through the translucent blue resin, while looking down into the vase reveals something quite different: dozens of individual cross-sections of the branches, showing their growth rings and natural markings. The contrast between the warm, understated hazel and the jewel-like blues and purples of the acrylic is particularly beautiful when the light catches it.

Every stage has been completed by hand in my Dorset workshop, from preparing the original hazel through to casting, turning, shaping and polishing the finished piece.

It is not simply a decorative vase, but a little piece of the New Forest landscape, preserved in a completely new form.

As with all my work, this is a genuine one-off. There can never be another exactly like it.

Please message me if you’re interested in putting this beautiful vibrant vase in a place of prominence in your home. It’s completely waterproof inside if you want to use it for cut flowers.
