The handbag that I have chosen for my cover photo, was the first saddle to bag handbag that I made. It was a gift for a lovely lady, from her husband, and made from a cherished saddle on which she hunted many seasons with her beloved horse 'Dan', who had sadly passed away.
The saddle was a black Fieldhouse, which having padded knee rolls, limited the available leather and therefore the size. This required a little more thought in designing the bag.
There were a couple of requirements, including a wonderful foxhound design lining (which was provided by the customer), with an inside zip up pocket.
The short handle was made from Dan's browband, which i altered to make it removable using solid brass Sam Browne studs. The interchangeable and adjustable shoulder strap was made from one of Dan's plaited reins, and the large brass rings that it attached to was made from the rings from Dan's headcollar.
I added some rich green girth elastic to add a touch of colour, using a split down girth strap to hold it in place.
I attach photos of the saddle before, during and after the transformation process, and with its very happy new owner 🥰 and screen shots of the lovely reviews from the new owner and her husband.

And here it is! The finished bag!
The body of the bag is made from the leather flaps of an old saddle.
The handle is a noseband that I made for my horse many years ago, with the addition of solid brass 'crown' buckles from an old in hand show bridle.
The simple but effective closure was made by utilising a large brass ring from a heavy horse headcollar and a girth strap and point pocket from the saddle.
The reinforced corners are made from the rich chestnut coloured leather from the panel on the underside of the saddle, as is the internal zip pocket.
The leather chapes holding the brass closure ring, and the buckles are made from the saddle skirt.
The shearling lamb fleece, and the military stable belt webbing were new, as was the rich emerald green silky pigskin suede lining, and the rich conker veg tan gusset.
It will have a adjustable shoulder strap also, easily changed using the brass buckles.
This bag is 100% my design, handcrafted and handstitched by myself.
Id love to know what you think 🤔?

Here are a few photos during the making process of my saddlebag ❤️
