No matter the weather, Cockington is beautiful and peaceful in every season. My closest friends know that I’m crazy about baskets and handmade stuff. Whenever we go somewhere and I see handmade baskets and ornaments, they immediately catch my eye and I can’t help but spend all my time browsing them. Unfortunately our house is not big enough for these things so I can never buy any. Due to my presen
t circumstances, I spend more time at home than anywhere else but I’m never bored. One day I watched a tutorial video on Youtube about how to weave a small basket from pine needles and I fell in love. I decided to buy a needle and waxed thread online and the next time I went to Cockington I collected some pine needles and made my first mini basket. I was very proud of myself and wanted to make more! I watched a video that said that in the US, these baskets are made from giant pine needles and that this technique was practiced by Native Americans for thousands of years. Unfortunately I couldn’t find any large pine needles in Devon and I didn’t want to buy any on Etsy (the delivery fees are very expensive as it's shipped from the US) so I decided to just use the smaller and thinner pine needles that I found at my favourite place. I think it is much more interesting if I can show you exactly which pine trees the baskets and ornaments I make have come from. I hope I can learn more from the biggest experts of pine needle basketry and that I can show you more of my creations.
