A national lifeboat service was the vision of Sir William Hillary, a resident of the Isle of Man, who wanted to the reduce the death toll from the 1,800 shipwrecks annually around the British Isles in the early 19th century.

He convinced a group of influential people in the City of London to take notice and the Royal National Institution for the Preservation of Life from Shipwreck was established at a meeting in the London Tavern on Bishopsgate on 4 March 1824.

In honour of the RNLI‘s 200th birthday, we will donate £50 to this amazing charity for each antique RNLI Marine Fishermans Aneroid Barometer sold in March 2024.

As sailors and rowers, we appreciate greatly the endeavours and bravery of these dedicated teams of heroes.

Antique pocket barometer with Welsh mining provenance!

This pocket barometer by Stanley was presented to Thomas Williams, Esq, by the officials of the Mountain Colliery, Gorseinon. In 1913 Williams's son took over the family firm, one of the few middle-sized colliery companies to survive as an independent until Nationalisation in 1947. This pocket barometer was almost certainly a retirement present to a fellow mine owner, one of the leading figures in Welsh mining for several decades.

Like this very good aneroid pocket barometer altimeter No B.19029 by Short & Mason for Army & Navy Cooperative Stores Ltd, London c1930.

Fully serviced, conserved, and calibrated, this is not a particularly rare type, though it is in unusually good condition. Of particular interest is the chassis struck with S*M logogram.
