News Update.

When I closed my shop last Christmas and switched to online retail, I was close to exhaustion. All the marketing on social media, news updates, trying to stay relevant, photoshoots, endless updates to the web site, replying to messages, dealing with customers, ordering supplies and running a shop 5 days a week. And then afterwards, I was going home to cook, clean and juggle all those balls too.
I noticed that some of my friends in business were on the same treadmill and mostly the time was spent doing ongoing, never ending, social media updates for little reward. It was sheer utter madness.

So when I closed my retail outlet, I decided to step off the hamster wheel and take full control of my business by moving back to a simpler routine.
There are no Google Analytics, YouTube, Facebook, Tik Tok, Whatsap or Instagram sales channels on my web site. I've removed them all. We're not selling to the masses so we don't need them.
As a result I don't spend much time posting constant updates on any social media and I don't keep an email list or send out a newsletter.
I think all these things can end up giving us information fatigue and if you're anything like me, I don't believe you want to constantly hear about the minutiae of our every waking moment.
Instead what I now do is only post updates when I need to and this, I have found, has been working far more effectively.
Plus it's allowed me to have more time to focus on design creativity and source new inspiration. I'm also enjoying being much more productive just getting on with my job as a designer instead of trying to be a web technician, YouTube influencer and social media marketing expert.

So, if we have days where we disappear from view, please don't worry. We haven't gone far. This slower paced, reduced input to being constantly connected to social media marketing is working much better for us. If you have any questions, please do get in touch. We'll be happy to chat. For now we're working hard behind the scenes reducing our social media time so we can be 100% dedicated to our design and production and give the best service to our customers.

Back soon. Nina x

New design for the Cottage by the Sea Collection. This is Sea Stars. A gorgeous little starfish design to compliment the Seaboard Check Collection.
This is the first sample handprinted onto linen furnishing fabric. (Don't worry, it will be ironed before the next photoshoot).
This colourway is driftwood blue but we will have other colours soon.

In the Garden Room today, even our fish are finding it warm. Our very pregnant little butterfly koi fish has beached herself under the water sprinkler. Clever little fish.

A lesson in the warp and the weft. The warp is the thread that runs top to bottom. Sometimes called the grain, it provides stability and structure to cloth. It's the scaffolding for the weft.
The weft is the thread that runs from left to right and creates the weave and texture in cloth.
When cutting out fabrics to make up curtains and soft furnishings, it's always important to lay out the fabric and cut along the grain, (the warp), which is parallel to the selvedge. This creates a perfectly straight line allowing blinds, curtains and cushions to hang and sit properly.
In contrast to fashion, where cutting along the the weft, (the bias), creates movement, fluidity and a natural twist, the fabric cutting for soft furnishings needs to be cut along the warp to stop the fabric from twisting and hindering the finished performance. For example, if a cushion cover is cut on the weft, it will never sit neatly on a chair. The corners will edge away from the inner cushion filler and it will sag and look untidy. Likewise curtains won't hang straight and blinds will bundle.
So as a general rule, it's the weft for fashion and the warp for furnishings.
That's the science explained. Nina x

I'm back! And it's time for some fun. As you can see, AI have transformed me into a fairy godmother which is quite apt really because I've been so busy behind the scenes preparing for a relaunch of my new range of inspired home interiors products. Sometimes we have to just get on with it and be our own fairy godmother. To switch careers is one thing. To clear the decks, regroup and start all over in the space of 5 months is nothing short of a marathon task.
But we're there. All our ducks are in a row and we're ready to relaunch.

We have four collections of hand drawn, (by me, I did art and design at college and became a surface pattern designer), handprinted fabrics, soft furnishings, interiors and decorative accessories.
I qualified as an interior designer many years ago, which sounds annoyingly a bit posh but I ignore the term mostly, preferring to think that our homes are places where rustic elegance, lived in comfort, marshmallow softness and decorative practicality nurture and nourish us.

So keep an eye out for previews, updates and posts as my new collection starts to be released.
Thankyou Nina x

Our British coastlines are providing all the nautical inspiration I need this week. Behind the scenes I'm sat in my design room, coffee in hand, drawing up the latest designs for our Cottage by the Sea Collection, which has been hugely popular.
I grew up living next to the beach so when, (if) summer arrives, I'm always drawn back to being a shellseeker and beachcomber under a cloudless blue sky and warm summer sun.
