Charlotte M Gardner Freelance artist and illustrator, inspired by nature, wildlife, 80's fantasy films and the children's illustrations of old. NO NFTS and NO AI

I have always been shy and introverted, so I grew up loving stories and creating my own worlds to escape to from my own imagination. I was a dreamer, always with my head in the clouds and have loved drawing since childhood, inspired by my comics and books. At first I wanted to be either a cartoonist, or an illustrator, or make animated movies. Then I was lured in by the thought of working in the t

heatre, especially as my other love was dancing. So I studied Theatre Studies and Design, but realised I didn't have the technical way of thinking to pursue it. Many years later I have come full circle and am now actively pursuing fine art and illustration. Inspired by Arthur Rackham, Charles Robinson, Brian Froud as well as many other wonderful artists and illustrators, I am exploring my own way of painting. Nature is my love right now, partly because it has been a great source of comfort over the years when going for long walks to gather my thoughts and centre myself. Recently diagnosed with ADHD, after years of anxiety, I am also using my art as a way to focus on something positive and find a new way of life and living.

Just watched and listened to a great webinar on Business Owner Burnout talking about how to cope with a small business while suffering from burnout, specifically ADHD and Autism Burnout. One of the topics that I really related to was overcommitment, the need to say yes to things due to people pleasing, which then leads to overwhelm and eventually burnout. One of the biggest things you need to do when suffering from burnout, and to prevent future burnout, is set boundaries and keep to them. Be honest. Have difficult conversations. Do the hard things like quit even if it means upsetting other people. You need to put yourself first, and those who care will understand. All these things were incredibly helpful to hear, and validating because having to put yourself first due to burnout after years of always masking, and people pleasing, can lead to guilt and shame. Thanks Rachel

Happy Easter! Thank you to Pop Up Creative Events for having me yesterday in Berkhamsted, my very first Art Fair. Despite my anxiety taking over a little in the beginning, and my card machine not working...it went really well!! Got lots of lovely feedback, met some wonderfully talented and friendly fellow artists and creators and even managed to sell a bunch of cards to strangers. The Easter/Spring Hare was a hit! 🐰

It's ironic that when using WATERcolour paints, sometime water is the enemy!!

Had a great time at Fresh:Art Fair in Ally Pally yesterday....a lovely mix of contemporary and classic art work. As a budding artist I was there for inspiration and to learn. To see what other artists had used in terms of paper...one artist was using Arches 600gsm painting botanicals on a huge scale which made me think as I paint on small scale and want to increase my size of work. Another artist drew their work carefully and THEN painted, which made me want to do the same as my drawing is my strength and I should use it.
I took note of techniques, brush strokes, drawing styles and sketchbooks.
This is one of the things I love about being an artist, is that you never stop learning and getting excited and inspired by other creatives.

Not ideal but need to get this sorted! Have been having pain in my right thumb and index finger since last summer, even dropping brushes suddenly in mid flow, and its still painful if not getting worse so taking action and getting it investigated.

A year ago I created a Christmas card using Rosehips in icy blue as my theme, and am now comparing it to what I've done this year. I was super proud of my Rosehips card, but also I feel like I've really progressed....you would not believe the amount I have learned via other artists, classes, research and just plain practising. Doing really is the number one way to learn. Doing and playing and experimenting.
