Understanding supporting small business who bring that magical touch to your events. Normally face painting is well under cost in comparison to other entertainment services as well... although face painters normally work non stop through the whole event with constant supplies being used
🎨Are you looking to hire a face painter but feeling confused by wildly different prices being quoted?🎨
Here’s a little clarity on what face painting prices actually mean.
I’ve recently noticed local adverts offering face painting from as little as £25 per hour, so I wanted to gently clear up some confusion for anyone booking face painting as event entertainment.
In Essex and Suffolk, the typical rate for an established professional face painter is £60–£80 per hour. That isn’t an inflated figure. It reflects the skill involved, safe working practices, travel, preparation time, and the ability to deliver consistent, high-quality work at real events.
Professional face painting isn’t just paint on a face. It includes:
• Professional-grade paints and products
• Proper hygiene between every child
• Public liability insurance and risk assessments
• Confident queue management and time awareness
• Travel, setup, and pack-down time
• Behind-the-scenes admin, prep, and marketing
• Knowing how to work calmly and safely in busy environments
When someone charges far below the going rate, it usually doesn’t mean you’re getting a bargain. More often, it means they’re very new, working at hobby level, or unaware of the real costs and responsibilities involved.
Even at entry level, once you factor in paints, brushes, cleaning supplies, insurance, travel, and unpaid hours, anything under £60 an hour simply doesn’t add up. It’s a loss, not a sustainable business model.
There’s absolutely nothing wrong with being new or painting as a hobby. Everyone starts somewhere. The issue only arises when beginner pricing is presented as a fully professional service, because expectations and standards are very different.
So if you’re wondering why face painting prices vary so much, this is why.
And if you’re a newer painter reading this, please take it as kind encouragement to learn the industry properly, value your work, and grow into it, rather than undercut it.
Hiring quality, safety, and professionalism always costs more … but it’s always worth it 💛🎨
