This Edward VI portrait from my Tudor Collection is the perfect decor for a devoted Tudor fan. The portrait is painted on a medium sized canvas board, perfect for filling an alcove or blank wall space and would slot nicely within a suitably sized frame. This painting is based on the Hans Holbein portrait of Edward as a toddler, holding a golden rattle. This portrait features the most loving detail I was able to replicate within my home in Cornwall and was a pleasure to paint!

Please note the portrait is demonstrated in a frame here, but the frame is not included :)

Edward in 1538, by Hans Holbein the Younger - portrait replica! I am SO happy with how this one turned out. I made the decision to remove the latin writing underneath Edward and focus more on him. I actually prefer this, although I was anxious when I started painting over the text scroll and extended the tablecloth... overall, I love how we look directly at this tiny prince with his floppy feather hat and golden rattle. I think it's one of the most precious paintings from the Tudor-era and I hope you will all enjoy my efforts! This piece will go on Etsy soon - perhaps the perfect Christmas gift for someone you know? ❤

Work in progress :D “Edward VI as a Child” by Hans Holbein the Younger 🎨

I cant get enough of this chubby little baby face. Edward VI was King of England and Ireland from 28 January 1547 until his death in 1553 – so we often forget about him. We always consider his reign so short it’s not noteworthy, but that couldn’t be more wrong. Edward was the first English monarch to be raised as a Protestant, and boy was he as fixated on reform as kids are on Youtube today. His version of the Bible was his Minecraft/Fortnight project, and he was passionate beyond belief for a young man. We always think of Elizabeth I as our first Protestant ruler, but her little brother Edward most certainly laid a lot of groundwork. It was Edward who introduced the English Book of Common Prayer, and it was his government that overturned Henry VIII's prior restrictions, allowing all previously suppressed English translations and versions of the Bible to be freely printed and republished.

What I like most about Edward, is that this is one of the only young childhood portraits we have (certainly of this quality). There are so few contemporary paintings of babies or toddlers at the Tudor court (they so often, tragically, died); but this particular painting was done by Hans Holbein the Younger as a New Year gift to Henry VIII on January 1, 1539. It shows toddler, Edward, wearing red and holding a gold rattle. I’ve never seen the original, because it’s in the National Gallery of Art in Washington DC – but I’ve loved making a good start on this replica!!! I've still got a long way to go, but I really wanted to share its progress so far!

I will absolutely be making more pumpkins to celebrate Anne Boleyn this year - orange, green, perhaps even purple! Both whimsical and grisly, not all will suggest her bloody end at the Tower!
