Watchet Harbour 🖤✏️
A very quick sketch of Watchet Harbour, drawn from a spot with a wonderful artistic connection.
It’s said that J.M.W. Turner was commissioned to paint Watchet from around this very location — so it feels rather special to stand here with a sketchbook and follow, in a very small way, in the footsteps of such a great artist.
The harbour, boats, water and changing light make it an irresistible place to stop and sketch, even when there’s only time for a quick study.
Just a few minutes, a pencil and a beautiful view.
Sometimes that’s all you need. 🖤

Sketching Willingford Bridge, Exmoor 🖤✏️
Sometimes the best way to sketch a place is to get right into it!
Here I am, sitting in the river at Willingford Bridge on Exmoor, sketching the scene around me.
As I sat there with my sketchbook, the cows came down to the river to drink, wandering past as though I wasn't even there. It was one of those wonderfully peaceful moments when you feel completely part of the landscape.
There’s something very special about being immersed in nature — hearing the water flowing around you, feeling the river beneath you, and taking the time to really look at the bridge, the moorland and the wildlife coming down to the water.
This is one of my favourite places on Exmoor, and being able to sit quietly in the river and sketch it makes the experience even more memorable.
It’s these moments out in the landscape that inspire my work and remind me why I love sketching directly from nature.
A little bit muddy, definitely a little bit wet… but very happy! 🌿🖤

Baggy Head, Putsborough Beach 🌊✏️
A quick pencil sketch from the cliff top at Baggy Head, looking down over Putsborough Beach as the tide came in.
I love the drama of this coastline — big skies, high tides and that wonderful sense of space. Putsborough is a beautiful, relatively remote beach, and although it can be tricky to get to, that only adds to its charm.
This little sketch was made as the tide was pushing in, capturing the changing shapes of the water and the sweep of the beach below.
And there’s more to come…
I’m currently working on a watercolour painting of this view, so watch this space! 🎨
Some places are worth the effort of getting there — and this is definitely one of them.

Pinkery Pond, Exmoor 🖤🌿
Another little black and white pen and ink study, this time of Pinkery Pond, high up on Exmoor.
This is one of those truly special places that feels completely removed from the rest of the world. Remote, wild and wonderfully peaceful.
We come here to wild swim, and somehow we always seem to have the place entirely to ourselves. I love that sense of solitude — just the water, the open moorland, the wind and the wildlife. It’s a place where you can slow down, breathe deeply and feel completely connected to nature.
I’m capturing it here as a simple pen and ink study, with the intention of perhaps developing it into a finished painting later.
There are some places that are more than just beautiful — they give you a feeling. Pinkery Pond is one of those places for me. 🖤

Willingford Bridge, Exmoor 🖤🌿
A little pen and ink sketch of one of my favourite places on Exmoor — Willingford Bridge.
This is just a study for now, but I may develop it into a finished painting. I love the character of this peaceful spot: the lovely clear river, sheep and cattle wandering down to drink, and the wild open moors all around.
It really is a hidden gem — perfect for walking, exploring and a family picnic. There’s something wonderfully peaceful and timeless about it, and it’s a place I never tire of visiting.
I’m enjoying capturing it in black and white pen and ink for now. Perhaps this little sketch will become a painting one day… 🖤

Loved painting a quick sketch as the sunset leaving K’Gari (Fraser Island) back to Airlee beach, came home and painted in watercolour a larger version which will on sale in the pavilion on Sunday 14th June.
Would love to see you there!
