01472 927 011 | What is the most awkward window in your house?

Every home has one. The tall thin one by the stairs. The one in the corner that nothing off the shelf ever fits.

Here are two from recent jobs. A bedroom with three tall, slim windows in a row, each a slightly different width, all with matching white panels so the wall reads as one. And a window so narrow it takes a single panel, still with full tilting louvres and the same finish as everything else in the house.

Because every shutter is made to measure, an unusual window just gets its own size. Nothing is squeezed or cut down to fit.

A bold bathroom deserves a window that holds its own, and this one does.

Marble-effect tiles in white and deep grey, and a pair of white shutter panels set neatly into the reveal. The lower louvres are closed so the room stays private, and the tops can be tilted open to let steam out and daylight in.

For bathrooms, en suites and kitchens we usually recommend our waterproof Vienna range. It is a composite rather than wood, so condensation and a regular wipe down are no trouble, and it looks just like the rest of the shutters in the house.

A quick one for anyone who has wondered whether they are too far out for a home visit.

We are a family firm based on Freeman Street in Grimsby, and over the next few weeks the van will be out in Grimsby, Cleethorpes, Louth, Immingham, Scunthorpe, Lincoln, Hull and the villages in between.

Short answer, no. Shutters are a complete window dressing on their own. Privacy, light control, a bit of insulation, and they look finished without anything else. Most of the homes we fit have shutters and nothing more.

But sometimes curtains earn their place, and this bay is a lovely example. A bedroom that needs to be properly dark, a big room with a lot of hard surfaces that wants softening, an older window that could do with another layer against the draughts, or simply a room that wants some colour and pattern at the window.

A few things we have learnt about pairing them well. Fit the shutters first and design the curtains around the finished frames. Hang the pole a good 15 to 20cm above the frame and let it run 20 to 30cm past the recess each side, so the fabric stacks beside the shutters rather than over the louvres. Go lighter on the fabric than you would on its own, because the shutters are doing the practical work. And on a bay, one pair of curtains on a straight pole across the front usually beats a shaped track.

Where we would skip them altogether: kitchens and bathrooms, small windows, cafe style and tier on tier, and anything above a radiator.

From Sunday it will be getting dark by teatime, and that changes how a front room works. With the lamps on inside and the street dark outside, a window shows the room off to anyone walking past.

This bay shows the simple answer. Tilt the louvres a little and the view in from the pavement is broken, while you can still see out and the room keeps its warm glow. Later in the evening, close them right up and the room feels settled for the night.

One turn of the louvres whenever the light changes, and nothing else to think about.

A bedroom asks more of a window than any other room in the house.

You want it dark enough to sleep. You want it private all the time, not just when you remember to do something about it. And you want it to feel calm, because it is the last thing you see at night and the first thing in the morning.

Shutters handle all three, quietly.

Tilt the louvres closed and the room settles into proper darkness. Leave them shut and the privacy simply stays, with no nightly routine to remember. And because they sit inside the window rather than hanging around it, the whole wall reads clean and still.

Then morning comes and you tilt them open, letting the day in at whatever angle suits you.

People often ask what actually happens on the day, so here is one bay window from the van to the finished thing.

The frames are built up outside first, on a sheet of cardboard on the drive rather than on your lawn or your carpet. Then each section is fixed into the bay, checked for level, and the panels are hung and adjusted until every louvre lines up across the whole run.

Then the hoover comes out. Dust sheets up, sill wiped down, and the room is handed back looking like the last picture.

That is our own fitter, Rob, not a subcontractor, and it is the same person who will come back if anything ever needs adjusting.

There is a worry that shutters are a modern thing and will look out of place in an older house. This one answers it.

Exposed brick chimney breast, a wood burner, oak beams, parquet floor, and a set of white shutters at the window that look like they have always been there. The louvres pick up the lines of the beams and the brick, and the white lifts a room that has a lot of warm, dark materials in it.

The second room is the same idea, softer. Pine furniture, a cream sofa, and the shutters keeping the window simple so the rest of the room can do the talking.

Cottage windows are often small and rarely square, which is exactly where made to measure earns its keep.

Some houses have one bay window. This one has more than one, and the owners have done the sensible thing and treated them all the same.

Bedroom bay first, with a soft blue wall that makes the white frames really stand out. Then the living room, bay and side window both done, so the whole wall reads as one. The louvres are tilted just enough for privacy and the rooms are still full of light.

The trick with a bay is that each section is built to its own angle, so from inside you get one clean, continuous run and from outside every pane matches. Do that in every room and the whole house looks considered.

If you would like your shutters fitted before Christmas, the last date to book your free home visit is Friday 23 October.

Every set is made to measure for your windows, so there is a making time between the visit and the fitting day, and this is the cut-off that lets us get everything made and fitted in time.

Book after Friday and we will still do our very best, but we cannot promise a fitting before Christmas.

The visit itself is free and there is no obligation. We bring the samples to you, measure every window, and leave you with a written quote to think over.
