From tomorrow onwards and for three months, the Snap-cap side of life will be shut down.

I am off to Galloway for 3 months Lambing and then Calving for a large farming enterprise ….

Sometimes, someone comes along and asks for something as simple as a pair of Snaps, with their initials …. and that really is at the heart of having something personalised ….

Were I not making Snap-caps, and if I wanted a pair, then my intials would be all that I would ask for.

The other idea for truly personalised Snaps is as a Thank You for an excellent day's shooting, as a guest perhaps. They always seem to be very well received. I've toyed with engraving the bag and a full set of details, but it clutters up the cap end, horribly ~ better to just have the Shoot or Estate name on the top crescent and the date on the bottom crescent …. they work very well, but more of thaty in another post.

There's only one Desert Ironwood? …….. that's true, there is but from different parts of different trees, it varies greatly and I like the variety ….

One test and it never fails, the wood sinks in water, and it's that hard ….

Being as hard and as close grained as it is, and though the chisels need regular sharpening, the finished product is, in my mind, perhaps the most striking material available and it finishes and polishes beautifully ….

The iconic .577'' Rewa. A cartridge designed by Holland & Holland at the behest of the Maharajah of Rewa.

All so often, 'phone photos really don't do their subject, any favours and this is such a time ….

Every now and then I start to turn a piece of wood, and I'm blown away at the beauty of it ~ it all so 0ften comes as a surprise and this is also such a time ….

Wild African Olive wood from Eritrea and in other places, the natives use the bark for, and amongst other things, treating malaria.

As a material, it comes in many varied and pleasing colourings and figuring …. one thing for certain though, it is all, well named!!
