Exclusive Premiere on https://weloveclay.com "Akiko Hirai | Mark of the Pot" a 30 minute documentary on the life and work of world famous potter Akiko Hirai.

Two years in the making, this latest Goldmark documentary film finds Japanese born potter Akiko Hirai at work in her London studio. The rise in popularity of Hirai’s work has been meteoric and she has now has sell-out exhibitions all over the world. Watch the exclusive premiere now on We Love Clay.

Hirai is renowned for creating Moon Jars – a traditional Korean vessel that she reinterprets with her own style. The film captures her unique approach to creating these jars, which involves intentionally subjecting them to stress and hardship, resulting in a texture that resembles drowned treasure unearthed from some imaginary shipwreck.

The film explores Hirai’s cognitive psychology background and how she infuses theoretical ideas into her work, making it bristle with feelings and sensations. It also touches on how she incorporates the viewer’s perception and imagination into her art, as well as her philosophy that a vessel is the sum of a fine balance between object, environment, and viewer.

In this inspirational film we hear from Akiko about her early life, her struggle to come to terms with her parents’ influence, living in a foreign country and her inevitable movement towards ceramics. The film culminates with shots of her beautiful and remarkable pots in an exhibition setting.

"When you make things, you carry a lot of yourself" - Akiko Hirai.

We're thrilled to announce a new documentary on Ceramicist Extraordinaire Akiko Hirai is soon to be published on We Love Clay.

Born in Japan, where she studied for a degree in psychology, Hirai discovered her love of clay in the UK almost by accident. Arriving in her late 20s, she initially worked as a volunteer with the homeless. When the stresses of the job eventually took their toll, Hirai enrolled on a beginners’ pottery course under British ceramicist Chris Bramble.

Join Anne Mette Hjortshøj for a masterclass in her studio on the island of Bornholm just off the Danish coast as she prepares press moulded square bottles. She finishes by throwing the neck of the bottle and describing how she will glaze and decorate using finished examples. ‘I spend most of my time in the studio working on my wheel, and I like the process, but sometimes it’s nice to get away and do something different. So I started making these press-moulded square bottles, in which you have a flat canvas that you can work on and that can show off the glazes. I see the materials in a different way when I see this canvas, when I see a picture more than I see a three-dimensional object.’

Watch our new 15 minute film as Japanese potter Takeshi Yasuda makes one of his signature celadon glazed, porcelain vases. ‘Not many potters would realise what I’m doing,’ he says as he constructs his vase in 3 parts, thrown upside down. Filmed in his studio, located in the porcelain capital of the world Jingdezhen, China, this film of Yasuda goes a little way to revealing why he is one of the most inventive potters working today.
