I’ve always said that funeral flowers are a huge part of what I do.
I feel incredibly honoured every single time a family chooses my little shop, and trusts me to create the flowers for someone’s final journey.
For me, it’s more than just flowers. It’s one of the last things you can do for someone you love. You can choose their favourite colours, their favourite flowers, something that represents them, their personality, their life. Whether it’s something completely bespoke or something more traditional, every single arrangement is made with love, care and attention.
And I genuinely love this part of my job.
But today was different.
Today I started making some of the flowers for my sister’s funeral.
Today the flowers arrived for her coffin spray — flowers that I had personally chosen.
And honestly… it broke me.
Because suddenly I wasn’t the florist making someone’s final tribute.
I was a little sister making flowers for her big sister.
I knew exactly what those flowers were for. I knew what I was making. And there’s something about seeing all those beautiful flowers sitting there, knowing they’re going to be part of her final goodbye, that made everything feel horribly real.
I wouldn’t want anyone else to make them. I need to do this for her. I need to put my love into every single flower, every stem and every little detail.
Maybe on the day, knowing I made them myself will bring me some comfort.
But today?
Today it just hurt.
Grief is bloody cruel. One minute you’re functioning, working, answering messages and getting on with things, and the next something as simple as a box of flowers can completely knock the air out of you.
So I’m sorry for bringing the mood down a little today.
But these are the honest thoughts of a florist.
A florist who spends so much of her time creating flowers for other people’s final goodbyes…
And who, for the first time, is having to make them for someone she loves more than words can explain.
My sister. ❤️
