I love a rainy day — properly love it. The kind where the street goes quiet and the whole town feels like it's wrapped in a cosy spell.

I've just closed the door to the little shop, the fairy lights are glowing, and for a moment it's just the hush of Silver Street, and the sound of the rain. That tiny pause before heading home… ☔✨

Views don’t get much better than this.... ❤

Time for a breather, a glass of wine and the cool evening air carrying the scent of rain and sea‑salt. You can feel the town starting to wind down after another busy summer, settling into its quiet glow, and wrapping itself around you like an old, familiar spell.

It knows the cooler, quieter months are on the way... 🍂🍁

I love an Abbey walk. Never more so than when it's that late‑summer‑into‑autumn shift, when the evenings turn a little cooler, the sky is every shade of purple over the cliffs, and the ruins feel alive. The season when Whitby's magic sharpens — when the Abbey stops being a landmark and becomes a presence.

Its surprising then that it doesn't actually hold all that many ghosts. Stories, yes, but not many that are actually true....

Every so often, a ghost story drifts back through Whitby like a haar, and one of the most persistent is the tale of Constance de Beverley — the tragic nun supposedly bricked up alive inside Whitby Abbey. Deliciously gothic, wonderfully macabre… and absolutely not one of Whitby's own.

The Abbey feels like the sort of place where such a spirit should linger: a skeletal sentinel above the town, stitched together from storms, monks, myths and the occasional Victorian novelist. It's no wonder folklore takes root faster than footprints on the sand.

But Constance?
She's a ghost of literature, not Whitby's stones.

Her story comes from Sir Walter Scott's Marmion — where she falls for the charming (and frankly awful) Lord Marmion, helps him sabotage another woman's suitor, and is betrayed for her trouble. She is walled up… but at Lindisfarne, not Whitby. And historically, the Abbey's later Benedictine community was men only. No nuns. No secret lovers. No grim punishments behind the masonry.

Still, the myth clings on — because Whitby Abbey looks like the sort of place where a walled‑up nun should be whispering through the arches. And because the North Sea wind loves to murmur things that sound suspiciously like secrets.

If you've ever felt something strange up there — a shiver, a whisper, a story tugging at your sleeve — you're in good company.

I’ve had so many of you asking about the candle cloches I use for my mermaid candles, and I’m really glad you have — they’ve become one of my favourite ways to display a candle.

So, good news: they’re here.
Beautiful clear glass, a gentle curved shape, and those whimsy gold stars that make them feel special without being over the top. They look just as lovely on a mantle as they do tucked into a cosy corner of the shop.

And there’s more on the way.
We’ve got new pieces arriving over the next few weeks to bring in that autumn woodland magic — warm tones, natural textures, and a bit of that moorland‑meets‑forest charm Whitby does so well.

🍂✨ Slow, steady autumn magic incoming. ✨🍂

Beach day tonic 🌿✨
I snuck off to the beach today to gather seaweed for my next batch of Whitby Protection bottles — I even had a cheeky paddle while I was at it. Warm sun, cold toes, absolute bliss.

Among the day’s treasures was this gorgeous vulcanite bottle stopper from Tindales Mineral Waters, Whitby. Late‑Victorian into early‑1900s — back when Whitby’s fizzy drinks were sealed tight with these clever little screw‑ins. Tindales was a prominent local beverage manufacturer based on Bagdale, Whitby.

It’s one of the most pristine I’ve ever found. Crisp, dark, and stamped with Whitby history. Funny how something so small can feel like a little hello from the past. The tide always knows what you need.

✨ Silver Street is going late‑night this Tuesday ✨

We’re teaming up with the guys at DeadGull to bring you a cosy little evening of after‑hours shopping on our favourite Whitby street.

You’ll still find us open for our usual daytime hours (pop over to DeadGull’s page for theirs), but we’ll be doing a little magical shuffle:
Open as normal → close at 2pm → reopen 4pm–7pm

Perfect for a post‑work wander, a cheeky tote‑bag treat, or a candle refill with a dash of coastal witchy charm.

Come feel the buzz, support your indie makers, and make Tuesday sparkle on Silver Street ✨🖤

✨Holiday Closure & Internet Update ✨

A big thank you to everyone for bearing with us this week/weekend while we haven't had any internet access or 4G. It's not ideal and I really appreciate you bringing cash. Massive apologies to those that were unable to purchase their lovely items 😞

Unfortunately the rest of the week looks to be the same so please, please, please remember cash. I don't even know when you'll see this or when it will post... honestly, if I don't laugh, I'll cry 🤣🙃

This brings me to holiday closure. Typically the internet will be fully operational in time for our summer break 🫠 We've had a cracking summer - actually a cracking year - but we're flagging. So we're taking a well earned rest to enjoy the last of the season. Due to this The Whitby Witch will be closed Mon 31st August - Fri 4th September. We'll be back open from 10am Saturday 5th September 🌙✨

Thanks again for all your continued love and support 🫶
