You have asked for our Whale Mugs so many times… and now they’re finally ready to make waves. 🌊🐋

Hand carved with swirling ocean waves and finished in deep blue glazes, these handmade ceramic mugs are our little tribute to the sea and the magnificent creatures ruling its depths. Every whale slowly swims around the mug through layers of moody blues, seafoam tones, and glossy ocean textures that feel just like crashing tides on the Yorkshire coast.

We absolutely love whale spotting whenever we travel along the coast. There’s something magical about scanning the horizon and hoping to catch a glimpse of one of these gentle giants. We haven’t been lucky enough to see them up close yet… but hopefully one day.
Until then, we’ll keep carving them into clay instead. 🐋🌊

These whale mugs will be arriving in our next website restock on the 8th of June, alongside plenty of other sea themed handmade pottery.

Today marks four years since we officially married our best friend 💚

And honestly… there’s a very good chance Quercus Pottery wouldn’t even exist without that wedding.
One of the most thoughtful wedding gifts from our lovely friends was a handbuilding pottery workshop for my hen do. I completely fell in love with clay from the very first squishy lump… and shortly after, Kris caught the bug too.

Fast forward a few years and now our house is overflowing with mugs, glaze tests, mysterious kiln bits, and “just one more shelf” that definitely became five more shelves.

16 years together already. Somehow both a lifetime and the blink of an eye when you spend it with your favourite person. We’ve travelled, chased adventures, slept under the stars with waves crashing at our feet, spent hours watching birds, hiked endless hills, drank sea worth of tea and created mountains of pottery together.

And before anyone asks — no, we have never recreated that scene from Ghost. 😉

Here’s to many more years of making, wandering, laughing and accidentally bringing home sticks, rocks, feathers, conkers, seashells and “useful bits of driftwood”.

Some dreams don’t shout loudly 🤫

They arrive quietly, like morning mist rolling over the hills.
A little stone cottage hidden somewhere deep in the countryside. White gate slightly crooked with age, moss creeping between old stones, smoke lazily curling from the chimney. The sort of place that feels as though it has always been there.

Mornings would begin with the dawn chorus drifting through open windows. Tea brewed slowly in a handmade mushroom mug, an Amanita muscaria curling around warm fingers while the world wakes outside. Damp grass under bare feet. The smell of rain, woodsmoke, and wild mint gathered from the garden path.

There would be baskets by the door for foraging days. Mushrooms hidden beneath silver birch trees, blackberries staining fingertips, hazelnuts tucked into coat pockets, bundles of herbs drying from old wooden beams. A sleepy dog snoring beside the fire while somewhere outside a goat complains dramatically for a second breakfast.

Every corner filled with handmade things. Pottery stacked on rustic shelves, paintbrushes in jars, dried flowers hanging upside down, uneven wooden furniture carrying years of stories. A little greenhouse glowing golden at sunset, full of tomato vines and tangled pumpkins.
Evenings slower than anywhere else in the world. Fire crackling. Cosy lamps glowing amber. Wind brushing through the trees outside while the kettle hums softly in the background.

A life stitched together from nature, art, warmth, and quiet little rituals.

That might just be the biggest dream of all...🍄✨🐾

We don’t really tend to plan our collections too far in advance. Most of the time I just go with the flow and make whatever feels right at the moment 😊

Lately I’ve been missing bright colours, sunset skies, and our little forest friends… and I’m starting to feel very tempted to bring them back.

So tell me — should the foxes, badgers, hares and woodland wanderers make a return soon? 🌿🦊🍄
And would you like to see more colourful, sunset-inspired pieces finding their way onto our online 'shelves' too? 🌅✨

Did you know? 🐞

The name “ladybird” comes from “Our Lady’s bird”, with “Our Lady” referring to the Virgin Mary.

In Europe during the Middle Ages, farmers considered these little beetles helpful because they ate aphids and other pests that damaged crops. According to folklore, people prayed to the Virgin Mary for help protecting their harvests, and soon after the red beetles appeared and reduced the infestations. The insects became associated with her protection and blessing.

“Our Lady’s bird” became “ladybird” in British English 🐞

And of course, they’re brilliant little garden allies — a single ladybird can eat thousands of aphids in its lifetime.

Our Leafy Mugs with Ladybirds are perfect for anyone inspired by gardens and nature motifs. 🌱

Sometimes you simply need to let imagination take the lead. It may steer you in a very interesting direction…
🐉✨
And sometimes the result looks like this — a magnificent dragon soaring above the ancient ruins of Whitby Abbey, carefully hand-carved into stoneware clay. An ordinary mug turned into a little fantasy world of its own.

A proper mug for lovers of legends, sea mist, and a touch of Yorkshire magic 🌊

🍄 Mushroom love continues… 🍄

Our Fly Agaric mugs, inspired by the magical beauty of Amanita muscaria, have become one of our favourite and most loved designs in the studio. Every handmade mushroom mug comes with its own little personality, from different cap shapes and colour variations to unique drippy glaze patterns flowing down the sides.

Each toadstool is meticulously crafted by hand, with bulbous stems, carefully carved gills, and textured spotted caps, all finished in some of our favourite glaze combinations. The glossy glazes melt and drip beautifully during firing, making every single mug completely one of a kind.

Perfect for cosy brews, woodland wanderers, cottagecore souls, fungi enthusiasts, and anyone who believes mugs should feel a little bit magical ✨

If you’ve been waiting to adopt your own handmade mushroom mug, this may be your sign 🍄☕
