Patience & Gough Furniture British luxury design house creating collectable furniture, distinctive textiles and bespoke interiors.

Crafted for designers, collectors and private clients worldwide. I find old furniture which wouldn't get a second look and give them a new lease of life. Experimenting with paint techniques and printing patterns I take them from drab dull wood to colourful fun chic pieces. I love nothing more than to be covered in paint getting my hands dirty.

Before Tora became silk, there was the velvet.
Following our recent posts about translating Tora into pure silk, we wanted to return to the original velvet - and show what happens when the artwork is allowed to work at its largest scale..
At our Bay View project, Tora Pistachio velvet was used across a pair of curtains and Roman blind in the large scale.
At this size, the tigers become part of the architecture of the window. The pattern has room to unfold across the full drop, rather than reading as a smaller decorative repeat, while the muted greens, warm tiger tones and soft neutrals keep the overall effect balanced.
This is why we offer our patterns at different scales. The artwork stays the same, but its relationship with the piece - and with the room around it - changes completely.
On a cushion or smaller upholstered piece, Tora can be detailed and concentrated. Across a headboard, sofa or full-length curtain, increasing the scale gives the artwork room to breathe.
Here, against the layered wallcoverings, dark ceiling and original detailing of the room, the large-scale velvet brings colour and movement without overwhelming the space.
Tora Pistachio. Large scale. Recycled velvet.
Available by the metre, with bespoke scale and colour options for interior projects.

Same artwork. A completely different mood.
Bromsgrove was developed as the cooler, quieter side of the Gilbert palette - a soft silvered sage layered with pale detailing that allows the intricacy of the pattern to settle into the room rather than sit on top of it.
Here, Gilbert has been used in recycled velvet across a set of dining chairs, the leaping deer, swallows and sculptural fountains are clearly visible up close. Step back, and they begin to dissolve into a softer, almost textural surface.
That balance was important when we developed Gilbert. The six colourways weren’t created simply to offer six different colours. Each changes the way the artwork behaves within an interior.
Bromsgrove works particularly beautifully alongside warm timber, aged brass, stone and natural neutrals - materials that bring warmth against its cooler undertone.
Gilbert Bromsgrove.
Available in recycled velvet and 100% linen, in three pattern scales.
Available to order by the metre in Small, Medium and Large scales. Samples available from mid-October.

A headboard, treated as architecture.
Our newest upholstered piece began with a simple idea: rather than placing a headboard behind the bed, what if it became part of the room itself?
The Panthera Headboard rises from the floor in one continuous upholstered composition. Oversized square panels introduce structure and rhythm, framing and interrupting the artwork as it moves across the surface.
For this first edition, we chose Panthera Ch*****ne on 100% natural linen. We love Panthera in colour, but there is something particularly beautiful about stripping it back to the natural cloth and fine illustrative linework. The tigers, botanicals and hidden figures are still there, but the overall effect becomes quieter, softer and almost drawn onto the surface.
The placement and scale of the artwork are developed specifically around the proportions of each headboard, so rather than simply covering a piece of furniture in patterned fabric, the pattern becomes part of its composition.
Shown here in Super King proportions against a King bed, the additional width gives the piece a greater sense of scale and allows it to frame the bed architecturally.
Each headboard is made to order and individually upholstered by hand in Manchester. Bespoke sizing is available, along with alternative Panthera colourways and fabrics from our wider textile collection.
Now available online.

Gilbert is live.
Our newest textile collection is now available to explore and order online.
Six colourways. Three pattern scales. Available in recycled velvet and 100% linen.
Each colourway has been developed as part of a considered palette moving between soft, tonal shades and deeper, more saturated combinations - allowing Gilbert to sit quietly within a room or become something altogether more expressive.
Head to the website to discover the full Gilbert collection, explore the colourways and find the combination that works for your space.
Physical samples will be available from mid-October and can now be ordered online.

Meet Gilbert, in fabric.
We introduced the story behind our newest pattern. Now we wanted to show you how Gilbert was designed to live in a room.
For all its detail - leaping deer, swallows, fountains and sculptural forms - Gilbert was deliberately developed to feel tonal. From across a room, the pattern begins to read almost as texture. Move closer, and the individual details start to reveal themselves.
Shown here in Butter, a soft, warm yellow with buttery detailing, the colourway is characterful without feeling overly bright. Layered with walnut, stone and quieter neutrals, it brings a gentle lift without needing to dominate the scheme.
Butter is one of six Gilbert colourways, each developed around the kinds of palettes we see designers working with - offering different depths and undertones rather than simply six unrelated colours.
Gilbert will launch in recycled velvet and 100% linen, with jacquard coming soon or available by special request.
The collection isn’t live just yet, but you can now join the waitlist through our website. We’ll send you the full collection when it launches, with complimentary samples available for those looking to specify Gilbert for a project.

Meet Gilbert — a pattern with a little London history woven into its story.

Walter Gilbert designed the original relief for Derry & Toms, the Art Deco department store on Kensington High Street. In 1973, the building became Big Biba, with its feather-filled counters, mirrored interiors and Rainbow Room.

Decades later, Frank Holmes found a beautifully preserved cast. With its owner’s permission, he took a mould, preserving the deer, birds and tiny details.

We then worked with Ukrainian artist Yevheniia Vinokurova to turn those details into a repeating fabric pattern.

The result is Gilbert 1933. Six colourways, in natural linen and recycled velvet, ready for another chapter in your home.

THE HAT IS UNDER REVIEW

Our reel about British manufacturing started an incredible conversation—and a much smaller debate about my hat.

Thank you for every story, memory and maker shared. We’re going to keep talking about what we still make, and what we stand to lose.

The mill closed. The patterns didn’t.
Following our recent film about the loss of R.A. Smart and the challenges facing British textile manufacturing, we wanted to show you the silk itself.
These are three original Patience & Gough patterns, translated from our artwork and woven in pure silk.
Silk changes the way you see them. The linework appears sharper, the colours catch the light and details emerge as the fabric moves. The same pattern takes on a lighter, more luminous quality—almost like a piece of jewellery.
One of the designs has already been used on an Overgaard & Dyrman chair, showing how beautifully the silk can work on furniture, smaller upholstered pieces and decorative details.
For now, we have approximately one metre of each design remaining from the original production.
These final lengths matter to us, not simply as records of what R.A. Smart made, but as fabrics that deserve to live on in rooms and on furniture.
That is why this story doesn’t end with the closure of a mill.
We’re now working with Gainsborough Silk Weaving Co. to recreate all three designs in pure silk and continue their story through British weaving.
We’re also about to reveal two entirely new Patience & Gough patterns.
If you’re working on a project and would like to use one of the final original lengths, send us a message.
And stay close. The new patterns are coming next.
