The veil is thinning… time to sweep away the ordinary. 🧹🕯️
Long before Halloween became a parade of plastic pumpkins and spooky decorations, people marked the changing seasons with ancient traditions, folklore and fire.
Around 2,000 years ago, the Celtic festival of Samhain marked the end of the harvest and the beginning of winter. It was believed that, at this liminal time of year, the boundary between the living and the dead grew thin.
Bonfires were lit, disguises were worn, and customs developed around spirits, protection and the changing seasons. Over the centuries, these traditions mingled with Christian observances and local folk customs to shape the Halloween we recognise today.
And the witch? The broom? The dark attire? 🧹
Their stories are far more tangled than the modern Halloween costume aisle might suggest. Witches, broomsticks and magical folklore have evolved through centuries of superstition, art and storytelling.
At Outrageous Vintage, we rather like our Halloween with a little history, a touch of the uncanny and considerably more character than a plastic skeleton.
Some things never go out of fashion. Some never quite rest in peace. 🖤
