Our Story
My name is Kerry. I live in Wivelsfield Green with my husband Miles, an electrician, and our two gorgeous boys – Harry and Etien. I have not been a furniture painter forever. I am trained in financial services. For years I worked in an office to make the cash to pay for childcare. Not long ago, I decided to make a change. Betty’s Treasures is the company I created after thinking hard about who I was, how I wanted to live and what kind of life I wanted for my children. My grandmother Betty Kennedy was my best friend and remains my greatest inspiration. She was beautiful and hard working, with an innate sense of style. She took the time to talk to everyone she encountered and never had a bad word to say about anybody. She epitomized the era she grew up in, caring for the things she owned, mending broken china, making her own clothes and treasuring family heirlooms. Wanting to keep her spirit alive, I retrained as a special effects painter and restorer. Upcycling furniture is now my trade: I combine my nose for a bargain with vision and imagination, sourcing unwanted yet perfectly good pieces, making them beautiful and returning them proudly to the market place. It’s not just nostalgia that makes me yearn for a period when everyone had more time to make things properly, to care for the forgotten and the unloved and to observe the detail in life. I believe that our future lies in making the most of the resources we have, instead of mass-producing reams of unnecessary new ‘things’. Upcycling furniture is my 21st century way of honouring Betty Kennedy’s values. Welcome to Betty's treasures, please get in touch if we can help in any way.
