WHAT IS THE TOP DOWN METHOD?

Most people still light a wood burning stove from the bottom.

But the cleaner, more efficient way… is from the top.

It’s called the top-down method.

Instead of building up from kindling, you start with your larger logs at the bottom, then layer kindling above, with a firelighter on top.

When lit from the top:
– the fire burns down slowly and evenly
– smoke is reduced
– the glass stays cleaner
– and the stove reaches temperature more efficiently

It’s a small change, but it makes a noticeable difference to how your stove performs day-to-day.

And once you try it, you won’t go back.

WHY THE GLASS ON SOME STOVES STAYS CLEAN

One of the most common concerns we hear about wood burning stoves…

“Won’t the glass go black?”

The reality is — it shouldn’t.

Modern stoves are designed with an airwash system, which directs airflow down the inside of the glass to help keep it clear while the fire is burning.
