🏉 Hand turned wooden threads - I’m getting a real knack for doing these now and have a few steps I follow to ensure they have this free spin ability. It allows for slight wood movement but I mainly do it because it’s satisfying.

This rugby ball is a chessboard design with walnut and spalted beech - I made sure to put the best markings in the centre.

This is the first rugby ball I’ve made from the Horse Chestnut that fell at Kempsey Church - it did smash a few grave stones but narrowly missed the church.

The insurers may have claimed it was an act of god, anyway, here’s one of a few rugby ball urns to come from it.

I’ve mostly got burr pieces - this piece was rather plain so I coloured it to help bring out some depth to the grain

Finessing the boxwood lids - all turned by hand for that seamless satisfying fit 🤌

Even the book (wood) worms enjoyed this.

Can you hear that lovely suction between the slabs? That means they're dead flat and silky smooth.

When I resaw I always make sure to have a planed face against the fence - gets a little scary and hard to cut thin stuff on the planer, but the thicknesser will go down to about 5mm.

These are final size 8mm (+\- 0.07mm) - even though the planer will force thin planks pretty flat as they go through, sometimes I get snipe or tearout so I now take it down to final size before it moves, let it breathe, then clamp it nice and flat in the hydraulic glue press 😊

7 days until Wizardry - going to be a very busy week!

This insert was about 0.05mm oversize - normal I can pull then back out with the lathe spinning but not this one! It might have been right enough to leave it in but I can't take any chances and need it fixed because if it rotates even slightly, the lid won't match up!

Shame the grain/Spalding didn't match up, but can't have it all!

I'm getting lots of practise in with these threads now - I'm aiming for a loose fit to allow for tiny wood movement but mainly so the two shoulders screw tight and square against each other

Very soft horse chestnut from Kempsey church - bit of an experiment so I'll be colouring it blue but I don't have time to learn how to lacquer it (also can't risk it) so it'll just be a sanding sealer finish and a high buff wax finish to hopefully bring out as much chatoyance as possible!

Watch that colour pop!

First coat of sanding sealer - the slight yellowing of the sycamore is worth it for that gorgeous chocolate brown walnut.

It's very soft and dry so I've had to get the best finish off the tool by slicing as scraping tears out the fibres, then hand sand up to 240 grit - power sanding wears the sycamore away much faster and makes it lumpy.

A quick water pop, re-sand to 320, blow out all the dust from the pores, sanding sealer, sand up to 600, more sealer, wax, buff, burial!

Does Instagram keep recommending Threads? Well here's two beautiful threads in boxwood.

Very fine work but got the method perfect now. I'm not aiming for a tight fit because the wood will inevitably move and go 'oval' with different seasons, and of course the free spin is super satisfying. It also allows for more discrepancy and for the two square shoulders to mate against each other when tight.
