Strandline — coming to Chintz & Wood for from June 18th to July 7th.

The opening party and Chintz & Wood’s 2nd birthday celebration will be on Thursday 18th June, 5–7pm.

Strandline brings together three bodies of work shaped by Worthing’s coastline: wood, textiles and seaweed pressings.

Groyne wood pieces by are made from timber salvaged from Worthing’s sea defences, preserving the marks left by salt, weather and time.

Wendy March’s indigo-dyed textiles explore the colour and rhythm of the sea through natural dye, cloth and stitch.

Sarah Wallace’s seaweed pressings record delicate coastal plant forms gathered from the shoreline.

Together, the exhibition looks at what the sea leaves behind — and how those materials, marks and traces can be reworked into beautiful, lasting objects.

One million views later… the candlesticks are here.
Jubal’s reel showing these being made has somehow just passed a million views, which is slightly surreal for a small workshop in Worthing.
The finished pieces are now in the shop: hand-turned wooden candlesticks, each one made individually, with all the grain, weight and small variations that come from working with real wood by hand.

They look lovely grouped together on a table, mantelpiece or windowsill — sculptural even before you add a candle.

Available now in the shop.

A lampshade in progress, made from vintage floral silk and a fair bit of experimenting with leaves.

The silk was first dyed with rhubarb leaves for tannin, then overdyed with woad flowers, which shifted it into this soft pale olive green. I love how the original flowers still show through.

It’s now being gathered onto the frame, ready to be lined with silk from a charity shop camisole, dyed a warm gold with leaves from next door's damson tree.

This piece is being made for my entry to the / Standen House exhibition.

Not very Chintz & Wood, admittedly. But sometimes an object is too interesting to leave in a box.

I bought these Japanese military sake cups years ago in a thrift shop in Oregon — a whole collection of them, carefully kept by someone before me. They’re small, delicate and fascinating, decorated with flags, stars, military motifs and hand-painted cherry blossom details.

They’ve been tucked away ever since, but a few have made their way into the shop window this week. Not our usual soft linens and hand-turned wood, but still very much objects with history, character and a slightly unexpected journey behind them.

Pop by for a closer look.
