It's British Flowers Week, and I thought I'd reintroduce myself to kick off the celebrations.
My name is Joanna. I've been a flower farmer for the past 7 years, but I've been a florist since 1998 (I'll let you do the maths!).
I began my career with an apprenticeship at Ashton's of Lytham under the careful guidance of Mr Philip Ashton. In 2006, I bought Lytham Posy Bowl (my first baby) a busy Interflora florist established in 1945.
Fast forward 15 years and life had changed dramatically. I'd got married, had two wonderful boys, moved house twice and gained a wealth of experience running a business. I was ready for a new challenge and wanted more flexibility around family life.
In 2018, I had an idea: to use our family land in Wrea Green to grow flowers for the local community. I had absolutely no idea of the challenges ahead (probably for the best!). I enrolled on advanced flower-growing courses and began my journey as a flower farmer.
In my first growing season, I produced enough flowers to supply Booths in St Anne's with 20–30 bouquets a week. It was a fantastic start.
Then came Covid, and the self-service Flower Stand was born. Open every Friday and Saturday throughout the year, it allowed me to connect directly with customers and continue growing both flowers and the business.
Seven years on, I'm still learning. I've learnt so much about horticulture, business and myself. There have been some hard lessons along the way, but I've always kept this dream firmly in focus. If you know me, you'll know one thing for certain: I never give up.
