What is woodworm? 🐛 🐛

If you buy antique furniture, you may notice woodworm holes in some pieces, back then the timber wasn’t treated, it may well be that the tree itself had been infested even before it was cut down and transformed into a piece of furniture! 🪑

However the small holes that are found on older pieces aren’t necessarily a sign that wood-boring insects are living it up in your home…. 🏡 🪑

the holes are actually “flight holes” which shows that the beetles have matured and worked their way out and gone, so what you’re looking at is possibly the remnants of a past infestation.

If you are worried about a possible infestation and it spreading to other timber in your home, please remember that Woodworms only choose timber with excess moisture as it provides them with more nutrition. The females will lay their eggs there, which will take up to 3 years to mature and leave. So with the Timber in all of our homes, be it beams or our furniture will all naturally dry out and be unsuitable for the larvae to survive.

Woodworms usually choose trees or broken branches rather than catching a ride home with you.

On top of that, modern wood is treated to prevent infestations which makes it very difficult for these little suckers to move into it. 🛑

The only risk may be if your home has a damp problem or poor ventilation, and the priority should be to stop that as woodworm treatment will only have a temporary effect in those situations!!
