Good evening, it has been a busy few weeks for us. Apples for a granddaughter, an army of bunnies hopping to a very special toddler group and tiny flower arrangements for mothering Sunday and special people. I am now working on a blanket made up of unfinished projects. Have a lovely weekend.

A new tool in the workshop.....& no, it's not me! 😂

We have added a 3d printer. A small upgrade to our equipment that will enable us to make a big difference to how we run things on a day to day basis.

In the video you can see it making a smoke extraction duct, that we designed, for one of the lasers, that we are unable to acquire elsewhere.

So, that's the plan with this - no novelty items, just useful parts made in-house that helps everything else work better.

Following on from yesterday's post - here's the finished sign.

Cut from walnut and finished with beeswax to bring out the deep colour of the wood.

Cutting a ‘Home’ wall sign from Walnut.

This one’s for pet owners — where home usually involves routines, familiar noises, and at least one animal absolutely convinced it owns the place. Walnut works well for pieces like this: it cuts cleanly, holds detail, and settles nicely once it’s finished.

We don’t try to make something for everyone.

We make things for people who notice weight, texture, and the difference between done and done properly.
People who care about quality — the kind you feel in your hands, not the kind you have to shout about.

That’s the standard we work to, and it’s reflected in the materials we choose.

And here it is, finished.

This is the board we were engraving in our last post — cleaned up, oiled, and ready to be displayed.
Solid acacia wood, personalised with names and a year that actually mean something.

These pieces aren’t made to be hidden in a drawer. They’re made to sit out, catch the eye, and quietly remind you why they exist.

It’ll get more comments than knife marks — which suits it just fine.

Process, not performance

Most of what we do never makes it online.

The test pieces.
The tweaks.
The quiet “no, that’s not right yet” moments.

That unseen bit is where the quality lives.
We’re happy keeping it that way.

And it’s why we’re careful about what leaves the workshop.

Hi folks — hope you’re all having a great weekend?

We get asked fairly often what sort of work we do (and don’t) take on, so I thought it’d be helpful to pop a quick post up to explain how we work at The Black Sheep Craft Company and save everyone a bit of back-and-forth.

We specialise in well-made, laser-engraved pieces — gifts and keepsakes that are designed to last. We’re a small studio and very deliberately focus on quality over quantity, rather than rushed or mass-produced items.

What we do best

Personalised home and family pieces

Thoughtful gifts for special occasions

Memorial and remembrance items

Small-batch business work where quality actually matters

What we don’t offer

Budget or novelty items

One-off business pieces at very low price points

High-volume, fast-turnaround production

Endless design revisions or “can you just…” changes

Custom work

Custom pieces are always welcome by enquiry.
Clear details upfront really help us quote accurately and fairly.
Simple personalisation is included; more complex design work may be quoted separately.

Business orders

We’re happy to work with small businesses, but minimum order values do apply.
That allows us to keep standards high, be consistent, and price things properly without cutting corners.

If you’re looking for something carefully made, properly finished, and meant to be kept, you’re in the right place.
If you’re after the cheapest option, there are some great budget makers locally who may be a better fit — and that’s absolutely fine.

Thanks as always for the support, and for backing small businesses that still like to do things properly 🐑

Happy New Year folks!

We hope you all had a wonderful and peaceful Christmas? We have taken our time off over the past 2 weeks to plan for the next year, with the aim of being far more productive than we have been over the last 12 months, with some great ideas in the pipeline.

We haven't forgotten about The Olivia Collection (which you may remember from a post a couple of months back), with items designed by our grand-daughter Olivia, in aid of Alder Hey Children's Hospital, which was so important in helping our eldest grand-daughter Daisy with her Spina Bifida. Unfortunately, due to time constraints with our full time jobs, a house move and other factors getting in the way, we have not had as much spare time as we would have liked, to work on this and other elements of the business.

We are also looking forward to continuing our work with local businesses, producing promotional items for them. So if you run a small business, or just looking for a personalised gift for someone special, then please get in touch and we will be happy to discuss and bring your ideas to life.

Well, that's enough from us for the moment, enjoy the last few days of the Christmas holiday (if you're lucky enough to still be off work) and we will see you soon.
