Can you paint straight over old gloss - or is that asking for trouble?
The honest answer is: sometimes you can reduce the sanding, but you cannot skip the preparation. Old gloss may be hard, slick and contaminated with years of polish or hand grease, which gives fresh paint very little to grip.
Our new Weekend Project guide explains how to check the existing finish, when a light abrade is enough, when to use an adhesion primer and why fresh trim paint needs time to cure.
Planning to tackle doors, skirting boards or architraves this weekend? Bring us a photo of the surface and we will help you build the right system before you start.
