Can you paint straight over old gloss - or is that asking for trouble?

The honest answer is: sometimes you can reduce the sanding, but you cannot skip the preparation. Old gloss may be hard, slick and contaminated with years of polish or hand grease, which gives fresh paint very little to grip.

Paint peeling off uPVC window frames? The problem usually started before the topcoat went on.

uPVC is smooth and non-porous, so leftover grease, silicone, the wrong paint or rushed recoating can leave the finish with very little to hold onto. Once an edge lifts, adding another coat will not repair the weak bond underneath.

Those tiny cracks above your freshly painted skirting?

Don’t paint them again just yet.

If the paint directly over the decorator’s caulk looks like miniature crazy paving, the problem may be happening underneath the paint film.

Acrylic caulk can shrink and move as it dries. If the paint above cannot move with it, the paint cracks.

But there is an important catch: not every caulk behaves the same way. Some modern products are designed to be painted immediately, while deeper or more traditional acrylic beads need more time.

• a joint that has physically opened
• silicone that will not accept paint
• staining through the caulk line
