THE FORGOTTEN UNIFORM – A STORY REDISCOVERED
For more than 35 years, a box containing two military uniforms lay forgotten in the loft of a house in Yeovil.
Then, one day, it arrived at The Emporium.
Inside were two beautifully tailored Royal Artillery officers’ uniforms, dating from 1939, bearing the name of Frederick William Volrath.
Intrigued, we began researching the man behind the uniforms. What unfolded was a fascinating story of military service, wartime journeys and a life that eventually brought him back to Yeovil.
This Remembrance Sunday, we are proud to display his uniforms in our shop window, honouring not only Frederick but the countless individual stories behind the history of the Second World War.
We’ve shared his remarkable story, and the discoveries we’ve made, on our blog.

Sometimes history isn’t found in a museum, it arrives at your shop door in a forgotten box.
We will remember them.
