SPOTLIGHT on our most controversial candle; Burnt At The Stake.

This is our version of the stereotypical "smoky candle". A candle that smells a bit smoky is such an overdone, tired scent profile. It is where most scented candle makers start, as it's quite hard to structure a smoke profile incorrectly.

We tested many different ideas for a candle with a dominant smoke profile. But ultimately, we knew where we'd end up; trying to make a candle that smells like burning human flesh.

Grizzly, grotesque, but undeniably smoky, Burnt At The Stake takes you to the heart of a pyre, that has an unfortunate human attached to it. The profile visits the pyre when it is fully ablaze. There are three different smoke profiles at work in this candle; woodsmoke, charcoal smoke and immolation smoke. It is the latter that gives Burnt At The Stake it's controversy; immolation is the destruction of a human being by fire. When human flesh is exposed to heat, it shares many similarities with cooked pork. In cannibalism circles, it is referred to as "long pig". So we added a sickly-sweet, salty bacon type of smoke, which commands it's presence through the entire profile.

It is important to remember that Burnt At The Stake represents persecution, and the defiance of those who are hunted, simply because they are different to others, or have different views of the world. By burning this candle, you are acknowledging those who have been destroyed through persecution, and showing those who persecute that they will NEVER win. They can kill us over and over again, but they will never truly beat us.

Black Phillip has taken itself on holiday. This is in preparation for it's next market announcement, which will be happening very soon. Once it's announced, it'll be nothing but work for 3 solid months. It was last seen wrestling a hammerhead shark.

It has also come to the time of year where we take a little break from trading at markets. You can still fulfill all of your wax dreams on our website though.

Don't forget to give our new perfume company a follow! We'll be doing another reveal for it next week! We are entering the advanced testing phase now. It becomes more and more real as time goes by.

The weather is hot, but not as hot as this blasphemous chunk of wax! Defy religion by indulging in some Deady Sins! All of the things that religion tries to censor, in a single scent profile! Chocolate scented candles don't get any better than this; the combination of chocolate, whisky and coffee makes for a interesting gourmand scented candle, which will take your name to hell.

If you're new to the world of Room Spell, thanks for buying from it and/or following it. And hello.

I am Dan. The creator of Room Spell and all of the scent profiles that it produces. I am absolutely obsessed with the way things smell. I am also very interested in folklore, magick, nature, myths, legends and dark history. All of the scent profiles in Room Spell are based on ideas out of one of those categories.

I am so obsessed with scent, that I have recently decided to start my own perfume company. You can find it here:

I create custom scent profiles for those who want them. I've scented weddings, corporate events, private events and I've also collaborated closely with some brilliant people, to create limited edition candles.

I host markets in York, to allow top level, dark creatives a place to showcase their work in the city that I live in. My markets are heavily curated, whimsical and a little bit unusual. If you've been to one, you'll know what I mean.

My goal in life is to disrupt people's perceptions, whilst being an advocate for gothic culture, outsider art, and the unseen. When it comes to making scents, I want impossibly bizarre scents to exist, for those who want their home (and soon, their skin) to smell different. It took me a while to understand that there is a place in this world for what I do.

Sometimes I turn into Black Phillip. A strange creature, that is essentially an exaggerated version of me.

I also make "music". But the older I get, the more I come to understand that I don't really like music; I like energy, chaos and noise. Sometimes, those things come out in the form of what humans call "music", and sometimes they come out in the form of a scent.

That is me and what I do. The second picture is my perfume making area of my loft laboratory. Opposite that (not in the picture) is where I make candles.
