A gloriously chaotic antiques centre ♥️. It’s definitely not for the faint-hearted, casual browser. You need lots of time, and Yoda-like focus. Sensible trousers and footwear will help reduce your chances of falling victim to a Final Destination style accident with a Jenga tower of bric-a-brac.

“The Onion Picker” by British artist Patricia Armett (1923-2022). Arnett was a consistent exhibitor with the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists, but is perhaps best known for her dramatic murals on the walls of a number of British institutions. She was also responsible for designing atmospheric backdrops for the Royal Shakespeare Company in the 1950s.

🔥Watch this painting burn🔥. This oil on canvas and another by the same artist depict Cloth Hall in Ypres after it was heavily shelled in WW1. We noticed some subtle use of red and pink under the top layers, but it was by chance that we noticed the effect this creates when sunlight catches the back of the canvas—watch as the sunlight illuminates the red undertones and makes the ruins appear to smoulder! It seems intentional, with the burning ruins even reflected in a puddle in the foreground.

We’ve got lots of artwork we’re hoping to find frames for in time for our upcoming open day. Including these c1930s-1950s gouache paintings on card by Ivy T. Attwell (1895-1985).

The Attwell’s were clearly a talented artistic family- Ivy was a relation to the celebrated children’s author, Mabel Lucie Attwell. Ivy’s husband was in the merchant navy, so they travelled extensively with Ivy sketching and painting lively scenes wherever they docked.

Ivy was the chair of the Devon Art Society for 27 years and one of her paintings is in Agatha Christine’s Devonshire holiday home, Greenway.
