We’re excited to have received planning approval for a renovation and extension project we’re calling Clay House.

Our clients want to add new living space to their three-bedroom bungalow, to meet the needs of their growing family. They’re also eager to create a stronger connection between their garden, kitchen and entertaining spaces.

Our proposal adds ample new accommodation within the roof space, including a master suite, two additional bedrooms, study/guest bedroom and family bathroom. This allows for two existing ground-floor bedrooms to be converted into a play room and family snug. A tired, thermally inefficient conservatory is replaced by a set of glazed double doors, mirrored in the adjacent ground-floor bedroom.

With its clay-tiled, mansard-style roof, the design takes inspiration from the Arts & Crafts movement, which often saw architects employing steep, tiled roofs above relatively low eaves to create compact and visually unified forms.

The contemporary, clean-lined, zinc-clad dormers sit legibly within the roof mass, flooding the first floor with natural light. In the master suite, additional light is pulled in through a rooflight set into a dramatically vaulted ceiling.

We’re pleased to see this project advancing to the next phase. Look out for more updates as it progresses!

It's World Book Day – the perfect occasion to visit the wonderful Guille-Allès Public Library, Guernsey! We're proud to have played our part in making our local library such a special community space.

In 2019, we completed our renovation of the Children's Library. Our playful design transformed the space from bland and functional to fantastical and fun.

The following year, we helped to upgrade the Story Tower. Our goal was to improve accessibility and flexibility, and to restore the magic of the unique space. The result was a cosy, playful hub, perfect for nurturing creativity and wellness.

StudiO Studies: The Case Study House Program

Launched in 1945 by John Entenza, the editor of Arts & Architecture magazine, the Case Study House Program was both a design initiative and a publishing project.

Entenza invited a select group of architects – many of whom were already associated with the West Coast modernist avant-garde – to design prototype houses that could be built affordably and adapted for mass housing.

Architects such as Charles and Ray Eames, Richard Neutra, Pierre Koenig and Eero Saarinen used the program to explore new relationships between structure, space and daily life.

Steel framing, large expanses of glass, open plans and modular components were more than just stylistic gestures – they were attempts to align architecture with the logic of industrial production and modern living.

At their best, these houses made a compelling argument that modern architecture could be at once experimental and humane. For contemporary architects and designers like us, they remain fascinating and inspiring.

In the latest installment of StudiO Studies, we explore the important place the program holds in the history of modern architecture, both for the buildings it produced and the ambitions it articulated.

We’re pleased to have received planning permission for the extension and alteration of a beautiful, contemporary, rural house near Guernsey’s south-coast cliffs.

Our clients, who love the form and material palette of their home, approached us with the goal of introducing new ground- and first-floor living space.

Our modest, carefully conceived proposal extends the property to the west and south. The simple render and sheer glass of the new additions are intended to sit in respectful dialogue with the rich, resonant tones and textures of the existing cedar shingles and tumbled granite cobbles.

The small addition to the west will provide wardrobe accommodation for a ground-floor bedroom. Conceived as a glazed wrap with simple flat roof, it captures space while respectfully retaining and internalising the materiality of the existing facades.

To the south, the first-floor extension adds a new bedroom and study space overlooking the pool and garden. Its form maintains and responds to the bold asymmetry of the existing building. Rectangular in form and with regular surround to all four sides, this simple extrusion builds a strong but deferential aesthetic with the existing building. It also achieves south-facing shading for the ground-floor bedrooms, which currently overheat due to solar gain.

With planning approval secured, we’re excited to move this project forward to the next phase. Stay tuned for more updates as things progress.

Community projects like this one mean a lot to all of us at StudiO, allowing us to put our expertise and experience to use in the service of an important local cause.

Viewed through a timber screen, evoking Victorian shopfronts and cosy train carriages, the warm and welcoming space contrasts with the harsh light and noise of the supermarket – the weary traveller enticed by the glowing hearth.

Big thanks and congratulations to our collaborators, including C A Duquemin Ltd, All aspects plumbing and heating, Smith Signs Ltd., G4S, Vent Ltd, Clermont Interiors, Rihoy & Son and Tony Booth.

Our clients want to extend their 18th-century granite cottage, introducing new, contemporary living space for their growing family.

Our proposed design expands the compact, 1.5-bedroom cottage into a spacious, 2.5-bedroom family home. The scheme emphasises spatial quality, improved circulation and visual connections to the landscape, creating light-filled interiors and seamless access to the outdoors.

Formed of overlapping horizontal layers, the extension employs a contemporary yet sympathetic architectural language, contrasting with but complementing the historic stone cottage. Materials and textures are carefully considered to integrate with the existing building and its setting.

Our proposal provides modern amenity and comfort while respecting the heritage and rural character of the existing home, offering a sensitive evolution of this historic property for 21st-century family living.
