Lakki is not beautiful simply because it is one of Europe’s most complete ensembles of Italian Rationalist architecture, shaped by the ideas of the Bauhaus and European Modernism. It is beautiful because time never erased its history.

Here, architecture became the imprint of an entire era—one that can still be read in its streets, its public spaces, and its buildings.

As I walk through Lakki, I find myself wondering: what vision are we shaping our landscapes for today? What war are we serving? And when the voices of our own time have fallen silent, when places and landscapes no longer speak, what will architecture say about us?

About walls.
Walls that define a home, a path, a shared space.
Walls that separate, yet invite.
Walls where flowers bloom, where art lingers, where every crack becomes a shelter for life.
Walls that hold the light, reflecting its changing moods from dawn to dusk.
Walls that speak with stone and steps, guiding the body and the gaze.
And then, the walls of borders and negotiation, of memory and belonging.
Perhaps walls are never just walls.
They are living spaces where nature, time, and human hands keep writing the same unfinished story.

The most generous architecture I encountered today was not made by human hands.

It was the dense shade of the tamarisk trees at Psili Ammos, Patmos—a living roof offering coolness, rest, and a shared place for everyone beneath it.

Perhaps the deepest meaning of shelter is not enclosure, but the quiet generosity of creating a place where others can simply be.
