Looking closely at the furniture, details, materials, and architecture, and taking a little inspiration back to Slow Object Studio. There is something about Aalto’s approach to form and material that continues to invite a slower way of looking.

This old kitchen cupboard began its journey after being discarded beside a bin. The paint was worn, cracked, and flaking, but beneath those layers the piece still held its character.
The restoration started by scraping away the old finish, followed by many stages of sanding. Loose joints were repaired, damaged areas and old holes were carefully filled, and a new cornice was made after research suggested that the original one had been removed sometime during the cupboard's life.

One last process before the reveal.

This new shelf is being glued and clamped into shape, ready to replace the previous one, which was added at some point in the cupboard's life and never really belonged to its original character. The aim was to create a shelf that feels like a natural part of the piece while respecting its history.

This marks the final process post for this vintage kitchen cupboard. The finished piece will follow soon.

Inspired by Japanese minimalism, this bed began its journey with the search for the most suitable wood. After careful selection, these pieces of European oak became the foundation of the project.

Each board was planed flat before the joinery began. The legs were carefully cut and chiselled to pass through the two side frames, creating joints that lock the entire structure together. From the beginning, the intention was to build the bed without relying on screws or nails. That goal was achieved by about 90%, leaving just enough room for future refinement and the next technical challenge.

Every project teaches something new, and this one was no exception.

The bed has now found its place in a new home.

Sanding is often one of the most monotonous stages in the making and restoration process. Hours can pass in repetition, with little visible change taking place. Yet, it is during this quiet and methodical work that the foundation for the final result is established.

In many cases, the true quality of the sanding only becomes apparent when the first finish is applied. Imperfections that were previously hidden suddenly emerge, while a carefully prepared surface allows the material to fully reveal its character.

For this reason, it is always important to know in advance what the final coating will be. The choice of finish determines how the surface should be prepared and influences every stage of the sanding process.

Sometimes, restoring an old piece requires adding new wood to an existing structure, and this is rarely an easy task—particularly when working with antiques. The original timber often differs in grain, width, and texture, while decades of aging have transformed its colour and character.

Over the years, collecting and storing reclaimed wood has become an essential part of the practice. Having access to aged timber makes it possible to approach repairs with greater sensitivity and respect for the original piece.

In many ways, working as a furniture restorer has naturally shaped the path towards upcycling—where preservation, reuse, and thoughtful intervention come together.
