How much light can a mountain take?

That is a question you rarely ask when you’re designing lighting inside a city.

It came up almost on its own, though, while we were working on a house in Vovousa.

A stone house, set in a mountain landscape that at night is genuinely dark.

And somewhere in there, the question shifts.
It stops being: “How do we light the house beautifully?”
It becomes: “How much light do we have the right to add here?”

Because when the landscape around you has such a strong presence, lighting can’t be designed by looking only at the building.

At some point you have to turn your back on the house, look at the mountain, and ask what will happen at night when every light comes on.

Conducting the Music of Light.

In a UNESCO monument
of Byzantine heritage,
light does more than illuminate,
it reveals.

Each adjustment of a beam
is a gesture of the hand; like
a conductor guiding an orchestra, light finds its rhythm.
Figures breathe, architecture whispers, silence gains depth. Everything converges into
The music of light.

At Reflectlights,
we approach lighting as an act
of a dialogue with space.
A dynamic experience shaped by the observer and the moment,
an aesthetic where the visible emerges through interaction.

Light does not impose itself
on the monument.
It listens.

What light taught me
away from projects

It’s not all about brightness.
It’s about transition.

In a dim corridor in Rethymno,
I wasn’t simply observing a beautiful contrast.
I realized something essential:
Light didn’t erase the shadow.
It passed through it and gave it direction.

In our projects, we talk about contrast ratios, visual adaptation, hierarchy, and directionality.
There, away from studies and technical drawings, I understood that contrast is not a number. It is an experience.

The darker zone slows you down.
The brighter one invites you forward.And this transition is what shapes the human journey through space.

Light does not need to be everywhere.
It needs to be where it gives meaning to movement.

Perhaps that is the most important lesson:
Lighting doesn’t only change space.It changes the way we move through it.

Signage helps a visitor find their way. Good design helps them not get lost in the first place.

That distinction sits at the heart of wayfinding. Signs, arrows, and information points are only part of it. What matters more is how a space reveals its logic to the person using it: how it becomes understood, how it organises movement, how it points, without noise, to what is important and which path makes sense.

Lighting plays a decisive role in this process. Light does more than raise brightness levels; it shapes how we read a space.

Exploring the Hidden Upper Galleries of Hagia Sophia (Nov. 2025)

A space once known as the “secreta” of the Byzantine era , an area closed, silent, and inaccessible — is now being transformed into a museum that finally reveals its stories.

As the restoration progresses, the hidden passages, structural layers and inner architectural logic of this iconic monument come to light. Standing inside these elevated corridors, one feels the brilliance of the original engineers, the spiritual geometry of the space, and the delicate balance between history and innovation.

It is a privilege to witness this transition: a once concealed part of Hagia Sophia opening to the public, allowing us to understand the temple from within — both literally and culturally.

Moments like these remind us in ReflectLights why heritage matters: not simply to preserve, but to illuminate.

To wait.

In our projects, we design light.

Nature, however, reveals it in its own time.

Today, 3 swallows crossed
the face of the full moon.
It lasted only a moment.

Sometimes, the most beautiful light is not the one we create.

It is the one that allows us,
for a single fleeting moment,
to encounter it.
