Iterations of glamour at The Siberian
O&O Studio reimagines a Central midrise heritage building as The Siberian, paying homage to the glittering heyday of Siberian Fur Store (Siberian). A light hand guided the minimally invasive design, updating the modernist structure for contemporary usage with spaces rich in character.
Established by Stephen Fong Sun-tou in 1935, Siberian is one of the oldest continuously operating retailers in Hong Kong. At its height, the company employed more than 1,000 people and represented Hong Kong on the world stage as a destination for outstanding luxury apparel.
O&O was tasked with updating Siberian’s 1967 commercial building on 29 Des Voeux Road Central. The refurbished façade is a rhythmic progression of the historic shopfront window arch, with its twin capping the top floor. The floors in between them offer a lively interplay of arched, curved and rectilinear windows that playfully draw the eye upwards.
The Siberian’s interiors pay tribute to the golden age of fur fashion realised through materials, textures and colours. Wherever possible, existing materials were retained to bring a visceral patina to spatial experiences. Semi-circles and arcs that recall the façade include arches incorporated into mirrors in the W/C and atop display niches opposite lifts. At key vantage points along the scissor staircase landings, calligraphy by the founder’s daughter-in-law Lina Fong accompanies nature scenes and vintage images of fashionable fur-clad ladies to discreetly reference the building’s past.
Steeped in heritage and glamour yet updated to be future-proof, Siberian is destined to be where past and present mingle to form and inform a future Hong Kong.
