I created this idea as my kids were both born in China and I wanted a unique name picture to hang on their wall that also reflected where they came from. The idea quickly grew into an A-Z poster as I wanted something to hang on their bedroom wall to help them learn to read, but I couldn't find one anywhere so I made my own! My 4.5 year old daughter loves hers and regular points out new letters to

me that she sees as we walk the streets. It has really helped her to see the world in a different way by opening her eyes creatively, encouraging her to use her imagination. The idea has grown into Chinese sayings such as 'Ni Hao' (hello) – a welcome sign into your home, 'Xijian' – (goodbye) – a mounted leaving gift with spaces to sign for friends that leave. Cheung Yeung Festival — double the Yang, double the meaning.

Every year on the ninth day of the ninth lunar month, Hong Kong celebrates the Cheung Yeung Festival (重陽節) — a day to honour ancestors, ward off misfortune, and embrace the power of double 9 “Yang” energy.

In a quiet Sham Shui Po temple, dragons guard the rooftop, lanterns sway in the breeze, wax lotus candles glow alongside hanging embroidered Yin-Yang and lotus patterns. Figurines of ancestors rest among offerings — a reminder that remembrance and balance go hand in hand.

So if you spotted a Yin-Yang sign in a temple yesterday, that was the universe giving you a gentle nudge — a reminder to find balance, even in a city that’s always on the move.
