COLLECTIVE COLLECTIVE is an International Architecture Office practicing Architecture, Interiors and Urban Design.

They are a research and concept driven architecture practice that offer powerful narratives, insist on Clarity, Beauty and Function. While remaining dedicated to the realization of Architecture, COLLECTIVE also engage in Academia, Preservation, Strategies, Scenography, Exhibition Architecture and Experiential Art. Founded by Betty Ng in 2015, COLLECTIVE is co-directed by Juan Minguez, Katja Lam an

d Chi Yan Chan, consist of a very diverse team with an international background. The team members have previously practiced closely with international architecture offices including those of Pritzker Prize winning architecture studios of Rem Koolhaas/ OMA, Herzog & de Meuron as senior members, and at various renowned studios worldwide. COLLECTIVE is globally oriented and strongly rooted in Asia, headquartered in Hong Kong with studios in Madrid and San Francisco/ New York.

A Chinese, an American and a Spanish met at Harvard GSD, each accumulated experiences internationally. Met again in Hong Kong and now co-creating projects cross countries together with the team at COLLECTIVE composed of 8 nationalities.

One of our favourite displays COLLECTIVE designed for “The Strength of the Lord” by Georgiana Houghton, 1864.12.08

Georgiana Houghton (1814-1884) performed a séance in which she communicated with her sister Zilla, an accomplished artist who had passed away nine years earlier, this incident convinced her that the session was not only real but a blessing from God compatible with her devout Christianity.

Houghton then entered training to become a medium and would channel a number of spirits in the production of these extraordinary watercolors. On their reverse are annotations, handwritten by the artist in the voice of the spirit she was channeling.

One and a half month into COLLECTIVE’s 5th year at The School of Architecture, Chinese University of Hong Kong for the one year Master of Architecture design research studio, our Directors are bringing 11 students to Shangri-Li and Cizhong Village in Yunnan, China for a one week field trip this week.

This studio mobilizes Architecture’s Agency as a diplomatic practice, rejecting the fiction of it producing merely autonomous objects. Our test site for this investigation will be in Yunnan, China, where we will be visiting 4 wineries meeting winemakers and their team on the field, at one the world’s highest altitude up to 2,700 meter above sea level.

We see architecture as a device where the diplomacy of production, from microbes, soil, climate, geology, human, economy to tourism etc, composing the notion of ‘terroir’ must be spatially negotiated.



Our biggest gratitude for the wine makers and their team to receive us during their very busy harvest season, allowing us to see and experience it all - very much look forward to the week!
