This style of burial accessory was in production between Eastern-Wu and Jin Dynastly. It is still debatable whether this type of Lion Figure was intended to be a waterpot or candle holder. One thing's for sure - Lions at the time, also known as Bixie (辟邪) was commonly seen as talismans for warding off evil. Oftentimes, wings are inscribed to mark its divine nature.
The Deep Celadon glaze, a hallmark of the Yue Ware family was once celebrated as “full as jade”.
The oblique incisions of this piece brings out its delicate contours and creates a texture that is uniquely satisfying to the touch.
